Fossil Q Venture and Explorist appear to be on sale ahead of 9/24 launch date

Fossil announced two new Android Wear smartwatches a few months ago, but they weren't supposed to be out until September 24th. Pre-orders for the Q Venture and Q Explorist popped up last month, and now most of the models appear to be on sale a bit early. You can get the watches from Fossil or at eBags.

Huawei Band 2 Pro fitness tracker arrives in the US for $69

As the novelty of smartwatches begins to wear off a little (pun intended), the dust is settling and those companies capable of making passable devices are beginning to become more apparent. Huawei is one of them, and even though the Watch 2 Classic and Watch 2 Sport weren't quite as impressive as had been hoped, they still make for a good introduction to the Android Wear ecosystem if you can get a good deal on them. If you want something a little simpler that's just for sports, Huawei announced the Band 2 Pro fitness tracker earlier in the year with no Android Wear in sight.

Facer updated to v4.0 with designs from traditional watchmakers, wrist selfies, and more

We've been talking about Facer since the early days of Android Wear; even before third-party watch faces were officially supported. The app has gone through some big changes over the years, and today it's getting one of its largest updates ever. Facer 4.0 adds content from a number of traditional watchmakers, along with a revamped website, wrist selfies (yes, really), and a system to detect copyright infringement. Okay, you're probably not going to be happy about that last one.

Bragi's The Dash and The Dash Pro will get Amazon Alexa support in October

Completely wireless earbuds are everywhere at IFA this year, and so is the voice assistant war. While Google Assistant is busy getting its foothold into many speakers, Alexa is expanding into headphones and earbuds and the latest to join its rank is Bragi's The Dash series.

Both The Dash and the newer The Dash Pro will get a software update in October to Bragi OS 3.1 that will enable Alexa integration. You'll also need to update your Bragi app on Android (or iOS) and link an Amazon account obviously, so that The Dash knows which credentials to use. Once that's done, you can use The Dash's gestures and movement sensors to trigger Alexa, either by a "tap of the cheek" or a "nod of the head." The former seems a little ridiculous and the latter could be falsely triggered during vigorous exercise, so I hope The Dash's sensitivity has been more appropriately tuned for these.

Samsung Gear Sport hands-on: A smaller, more durable Gear smartwatch

Samsung is still steering well clear of Android Wear at IFA 2017 with both of its new wearables. The larger of the two is the Samsung Gear Sport, a follow-up to last year's Gear S3. It's not intended to replace that watch, but it's a smaller and you might say more fun wearable with an assortment of band options and many of the features that have made Samsung's wearables notable. The most important thing here; the Gear Sport fits wonderfully, and that makes me happy.

Samsung announces Gear Sport, Gear Fit2 Pro, and new Gear IconX earbuds

Samsung turned up at IFA in Berlin with some new things to show off, but not a phone—the Galaxy Note 8 was revealed last week. Samsung's IFA push is all about wearables. There's a new Gear smartwatch, a fitness band (thoroughly leaked), and a new version of the IconX wireless earbuds. Only the new Gear Fit has a price and release date, but the others will be in the not too distant future.

Connect Watch is the first device to be built for AsteroidOS

Late last year, we learned of a fledgling indie wearable OS that could run on Android Wear devices. The open source, Linux-based AsteroidOS is built by French developer Florent Revest and was compatible with several watches at launch, including LG's G Watch and Urbane, the Asus ZenWatch 2, and the Sony Smartwatch 3. The OS is now taking its next step, as Connect Watch has revealed the first watch to be built specifically to run AsteroidOS.
