Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android applications and live wallpapers that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous two weeks or so. Today I have a new streaming app for the Discovery Channel and its many subsidiaries, a wellness app that offers meme customization for its alerts, and the early arrival of OnePlus's Health app. So without further ado, here are all of the new and notable Android apps released on the Play Store in the last two weeks.
At one end of the spectrum, we have companies such as Sony and LG that launch a handful of phones and call it a year. Then there's Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi that launches so many phones that's it's hard to keep track. Adding to its selection is the newly-launched Redmi Note 9T 5G that — as the name suggests — gives you access to 5G networks without breaking the bank.
The original Moto G pioneered the mid-range phone space, and subsequent released have offered at least respectable value. After a few stumbles, we quite liked last year's Moto G Power and G Stylus. A new generation of budget Moto phones launch this very month, and three of them are Moto G phones. There are new, more powerful versions of the G Power and G Stylus, as well as a G Play priced at just $170. If you want to step up from the G, Motorola also has the new Motorola One 5G Ace, which is its cheapest 5G phone yet at $400.
Setting up new smart home devices is always a hassle, which you might have noticed following the holidays and presents under the tree. You have to look through a list of Assistant actions during setup and select the appropriate one, which is just one part of the multi-step pairing process. Google is looking to make this step easier with the introduction of suggestion chips for new device's actions on your network, but smart home app developers will have to do their part to enable this.
Google TV is the latest iteration of Google's smart TV software, having made its debut on the latest Chromecast a few months back. Sony's new Bravia XR TVs are among the first to arrive with Google TV built-in, and they have some other noteworthy features as well.
For some of you, an Android tablet might be all you need — maybe just with a few mode changes like a dock, a folio, maybe even a pen. Lenovo has catered to this very peculiar subset for a long time and it's doing so again for 2021 with its latest Tab P11.
There are plenty of truly wireless earbuds on the market, but not many of them can claim to be as unique as the new Bose Sport Open Earbuds. They're IPX4 rated, can go for 8 hours of battery life on a single charge — and make virtually no skin contact, sitting above the ear and allowing listeners to stay aware of their surroundings in a way that practically no other earbud can do.
For the most part, people make use of Google Assistant to get work done or learn more about stuff. However, as we've seen over the years, there's also a lighter side to it that shows up now and then. The latest advancement along that line is a new Do Nothing mode that does just what the name suggests — nothing. And yeah, there's plenty of sass in its responses.
Motorola's Moto G lineup has been creeping up in price and features for a while now, and last year, the company tried something different. Moto released two G phones in the United States (and some other regions), the G Power and G Stylus. The latter was equipped with a passive stylus, making it a competitor against the LG Stylo series, and now Motorola is working on a super-sized sequel.
