Samsung releases Oreo kernel source code for the Galaxy S8/S8+

Android OEMs are required to release the kernel source code every time they push a new Android version to a device. It includes any modifications they've made and its what tinkerers then use to build custom ROMs and other mods. Some OEMs are quick to release the code after an update, whereas some drag their heels. In this instance, Samsung has been impeccably fast.

After a few months of beta testing, Samsung has finally begun rolling out the official Android 8.0 Oreo update to the Galaxy S8 and S8+. It's been almost six months since the first public version of Oreo was released to the original Pixel, but then again, it's not like we aren't already used to slow rollouts anyway.

Oreo beta program for the Galaxy S8 ending January 26

Back in November, Samsung started rolling out beta builds of Android 8.0 Oreo for the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Several updates to that beta have been released over the past few months, but now Samsung is getting ready for the final public release. In the release notes for the most recent beta, the company announced that the program would end on January 26.

Last August, I published a list of the most and least popular smartphones and tablets used on Android Police. That post was surprisingly popular - and I've had repeated requests for a follow-up. Now that well over a year has passed, I think the time is right for a new installment, and one spanning a far greater time period than the month-long data set I used to compile the last version.

This time, I'll be showing you which devices were the most popular across the whole of 2017. And, of course, I'll show you some of the outliers, to give you a sense of how some devices have fallen (or never grown) from the ranks.

Third Oreo beta update now rolling out to Galaxy S8 and S8+

Samsung announced an Oreo beta for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ a few weeks ago and has been updating it pretty regularly since. A second beta was released a little over a week ago, and now a third one is out. There's only one truly new feature, but a lot of fixes are present.
