Energy Ring wraps a battery indicator around the Galaxy S10's hole punch camera

The hole-punch shaped front cam on the Galaxy S10 family might have been an eyesore for some, but that only lasted all of two minutes. Soon, creative users were making wallpapers to fit perfectly with the cutout, then they established a subreddit for them, and Samsung got in on the fun in an official manner. But if wallpapers aren't your thing, or if you want something to hide that camera in other apps, there's now another approach. Energy Ring, a new app, puts the battery indicator right around the camera hole, almost making you forget about it.

Chainfire's new Hidey Hole app collects Galaxy S10 hole punch wallpapers from Reddit

You probably know Chainfire from his work on SuperSU, which he stepped away from last year. Chainfire's latest project isn't quite as complex, but it is pretty timely. The Galaxy S10 launch has spawned a community dedicated to making wallpapers that celebrate the hole punch display, and Chainfire's Hidey Hole app puts all those wallpapers in one place.

You can't enroll your new Galaxy S10 in Samsung Premium Care unless you added it during purchase

Last year, some Galaxy S9/S9+ owners had trouble registering their brand new devices for Premium Care — Samsung's great extended warranty and in-person support program. The option wasn't available if you didn't pick it while buying your device, and post-purchase enrollment was only opened in September — six months after the phones first became available. History is repeating itself this year, and once again, S10 owners are finding themselves in the same situation.

Galaxy S10e review: The best Android phone for the money - and for most people

I reviewed the Galaxy S10+, and I had a lot of positive things to say about it. Epic battery life, an outstanding display, and performance that blew away almost anything coming out of 2018 set a new bar for smartphones this year, and I still think all that's true. But it's a phone with drawbacks: a fairly terrible fingerprint scanner, a very high price, and a bunch of secondary cameras that really aren't all that great, making them feel like afterthoughts. The standard Galaxy S10 doesn't really do much to redeem those faults - it's a bit cheaper, sure, but you take such a substantial hit on battery life that it's hard to say it comes with no tradeoffs.

Samsung's One UI night mode forces Android Auto to think it's always nighttime

With One UI, Samsung introduced a system-wide night mode for its Android Pie devices. The new feature darkens the manufacturer's proprietary software such as the Calculator and Messages apps and also alters the overall menus and interface colors, but still requires you to manually enable dark mode in other applications like Messenger or Slack. Android Auto, on the other hand, happily receives this setting and defaults to it, no matter the time of the day.

Samsung embraces the Galaxy S10 camera cutout with new custom wallpapers

We were all a bit skeptical when Samsung started talking about the "Infinity-O" display tech last year. As expected, the Galaxy S10 family sports a hole in the display for the front-facing cameras. At first, Samsung sought to downplay the holes, but now it's getting with the trend of wallpapers that work with the cutout.

The Galaxy S10 can't tell when it's in your pocket, keeps waking the screen

All but the earliest Android phones have had proximity sensors to turn the screen off when you're on a call or drop the device in your pocket. For all the fancy premium features in the new Samsung Galaxy S10 family, they don't seem to use the proximity sensor correctly. Owners across the internet are complaining of accidental touches while the phone is in a pocket, which shouldn't happen on a budget phone, let alone one that costs as much as $1,000.
