Lenovo fixes Smart Display low-volume bug, update coming soon

Over the past month or so, a strange bug has been affecting the Lenovo Smart Display. In some cases, voice responses from Google Assistant would start at 0% volume, then slowly raise to the actual volume after a few words. Multiple owners have reported the bug, including our own Artem (#artemsluck), but Lenovo says the glitch has finally been fixed.

Lenovo's 8-inch Smart Display has dropped to $100 again

One of this year's hot Black Friday items, at least in the Google tech circle, was Lenovo's 8-inch Smart Display for $100. Google's own Home Hub was the same price, but Lenovo's model has better speakers and a camera for Duo video calls. If you missed out on the original sale, the display has once again dropped to $99.99.

Lenovo's Smart Display was the first Assistant-powered screen on the market, but it wasn't cheap. Luckily, the price has come down somewhat over the last few months. It even got as low as $150 at Costco on Black Friday. Today's sale isn't quite that low, but it's close at $160.

Beware when buying third-party Google Assistant speakers and Smart Displays, updates and features are not equal

Another year, another category of Google-compatible products has flooded the market. A few years ago, it was the Chromecast, then it was the Google Home and Home Mini, and now it's the Google Home Hub. With every first-party release comes a slew of third-party alternatives, boasting the same features, same integrations, same functions, but with different designs and prices. On paper, they should be equal to Google's, but time and time again, we've learned that they're not.

Never though have the lines blurred as much as with the Home Hub and its Lenovo and JBL brethren. They look almost the same, both on the outside and in their interface, and Google pushed them earlier than its Home Hub, advertising them and talking about them as if they were its own.

JBL Link View smart display is just $150 at Verizon ($100 off)

Google's Home Hub and the Lenovo's Smart Display might be the most popular Assistant-based smart displays this Black Friday — we figured the hardest decision people would have was between the two — but they're not the only Assistant-game in town. JBL's Link View is an option for those that prioritize audio over video. And if you want to pick one up for cheap, Verizon has it for just $150 right now. That's $50 less than any other retailer right now, and $100 less than MSRP.

LG is joining the Smart Display game, becoming the fourth company to do so after Lenovo, JBL, and Google itself. The Smart Display, formally dubbed "XBOOM AI ThinQ View WK9" (who comes up with these names?), puts a focus on audio with its dual 20W speakers. LG first announced this all the way back in January at CES, but we hadn't heard anything else until now. It's available now at an introductory price of $199.99, $100 off its MSRP.
