Check out XDA's incredibly detailed analysis of the Pixel 2 XL's display

Sometimes you don't want to read up on how someone "feels" about a product. Everything's subjective, of course, and it's good to combine multiple viewpoints, but once in a while, it's nice to just sit down and examine the raw data, that way you can come to your own conclusions. And Dylan Raga over at XDA-Developers just assembled an intense and in-depth analysis of the Pixel 2 XL's display that's worth a read. At least, if you'd like to scratch that purely quantitative itch.

Opinion: Google has quietly become one of the world's most important hardware companies

As we say goodbye to 2017, I'd like you to think back to five years ago - specifically, Google five years ago. At that time, if I had told you Google was one of the world's most important consumer electronics manufacturers, you'd probably have laughed at me.

Mentally put yourself in 2012: Google's just announced the fourth Nexus phone, the Nexus 4, running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, along with the Nexus 10 tablet. At Google I/O six months prior, it unveiled the Nexus Q - a device intended to be some sort of smart entertainment hub... and proceeded to cancel its public launch.

Some apps like Words With Friends 2 can break the Pixel 2's 'Now Playing' music recognition

The Pixel 2 has been in and out of the news here for issues both major and minor, and today we have a somewhat humorous one. Apparently, it is possible for installed apps, like Words With Friends 2, to interfere with the "Now Playing" music recognition feature. Google is aware of the issue, though, and thankfully it's not that big a problem.

What We Use, 2017 Edition: The stuff Ryan can't live without

I spend my days writing about technology, and I spend much of my remaining time playing with it for fun. Consequently, I have a lot of nerdy stuff that's become integral to my life, and maybe you're interested in what it all is. It's been almost two years since I did a "what we use" post, and a lot has changed. My preferred phones are different, of course, but I've fallen deep down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole, too. Events have also conspired against me to require that I build a new desktop computer. Here are all the things (mostly keyboards) that I can't live without.

Some are experiencing a rattling or buzzing problem with the Pixel 2 XL's speakers

Google's Pixel 2 XL might be a great phone, but it hasn't been without controversy. Now we can add one more issue to the growing list. For many, one or both of the phone's front-facing speakers suffer from distortion/rattling. In some cases, the problem only seems to crop up at louder volumes, but for others (including us here at AP) it occurs even at lower volumes such as during phone calls.

Some Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners claiming included headphone adapter doesn't work

The second-generation Pixel phones have had some struggles. Following user reports of problems with the OLED display, strange effects when taking photos of LED lights, seemingly muted microphones, a mysterious buzzing noise, random reboots, and crashes in Android Auto mode, it has been a tumultuous time for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners. Multiple users in the Google Product Forums have now claimed that the USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapters are not working on their phones, with sound instead being played through the device.

It's a fantastic time to be in the market for a Pixel 2 or 2 XL, especially if you're a Verizon customer and live near a Target store. Hot on the heels of a Google Store deal offering $50-75 off the latest Pixel phones, Target is offering a $250 gift card if you activate a Pixel 2 or 2 XL on a new Verizon line or a current one, and Verizon is offering a $300 bill credit spread out over 24 months. That adds up to a rather hefty $550 off Google's latest smartphones, if you're fine with some creative math.

[Deal Alert] Pixel 2 and 2 XL are $50-$75 off at the Google Store

Google's Pixel 2 and 2 XL might not be without their drawbacks, but the pair are still excellent phones with some of the best software and cameras out there. The most significant real disadvantage to each has been the price tag. At $649-949, they weren't exactly cheap. But, for a short time, Google has discounted both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL—$50 in the case of the Pixel 2, and $75 in the case of the 2 XL. You can nab both over at the Google Store

Google has added text to the Pixel Launcher search box for some, and nobody wants it

Google is no stranger to testing both warranted and unwarranted design changes in its apps on normal users, so this comes as no surprise. This time Google is testing a small change to the Pixel Launcher, but it's one that nobody asked for, and seemingly nobody wants it either.
