Latest Yelp Update Lets Users Search For A Specific Phrase Within Reviews

You're in a restaurant and want to know about its chicken. You could ask the waiter, but considering they're an employee, you can only believe what they're saying but so much. If you want to really know whether this place cooks its chicken better than the joint up the road, then there's really only one source you turn to - Yelp. Okay, it's not the only one, but it's the first that comes to mind, and with the latest update, its mobile app is now even better suited for situations such as this.

Yelp (Finally) Adds Ability To Publish Reviews From Mobile, Gets New Photo Features

According to Yelp, "the stars have aligned" for its new release, bringing a much-anticipated feature and a few photo-related tweaks. The anticipated feature I mentioned is, as the title of this post suggests, the ability to publish reviews right from your phone using the "add review" button from any business page.

Previously, users could only draft reviews for publication later through Yelp's website. Now though, you can publish reviews on the go or in the heat of the moment, before ever leaving the establishment you're praising and/or criticizing!

Yelp Update Introduces New Nearby Page, Puts Stronger Emphasis On Local Goings-On, Adds In-App Delivery/Pickup Ordering [Updated]

What do you do when you arrive in a new city and want to know what to do? I'm sure there are plenty of possible answers, but the correct one is to fire up Yelp. In the US, it's just hard to find a competing platform that offers the sheer depth and functionality that the service offers. Yelp displays discounts, allows user to make reservations, has Open Table integration, and - my personal favorite - gives quick access to addresses.

Yelp For Android Updated To v3.7, Finally Adds Action Bar, And Something Called Yelp Talk

The Yelp app for Android has been updated to version 3.7, and brings some much-needed action bar love to everyone's favorite restaurant and other place-finding service... thing. Except they sort of botched it a little bit - with a big, fat ugly gray bar at the bottom of the map and result list UI that decreases the amount of visible content. Lovely.

On the upside, now you have a 3-dot menu button, and the standard action bar back button, too.

Yelp App Updated To Add New Groupon Now! Style "Deals" Feature

Yelp received an update today, and it adds a brand-new mobile-exclusive feature called Deals, which is essentially a competitor to Groupon's Groupon Now!. The Deals button found on the updated app integrates Yelp Special Offers, Check-In Offers, and its time/location-sensitive Deals all into a single, location-based menu.

Like Groupon Now!, you can only view offers within a certain distance of your current location (which is to say, it can't be manually set).

Yelp Update Brings OpenTable Integration - Make Reservations Straight From The App

Score another win for Yelp in its battle against Google Maps: in the most recent update, Yelp's Android app gained the ability to make restaurant reservations thanks to integration with OpenTable.

For those already familiar with the reservation-making app, you'll notice that it's pretty much the same experience - the "Find a Table" screens on both are virtually identical, both of them allowing you to choose the date, time, and party size for your reservation.

Yelp Android App v2.5 Introduces Check-in Offers

Yelp's mobile app on Android just got an update to version 2.5, introducing just one feature - check-in offers. Check-in offers are new to Yelp but not new in the industry - 4square pioneered the concept, followed by Facebook and SCVNGR. Yelp introduced mobile check-ins in July of this year.

The basic idea is whenever you check into a business using the mobile app, you may be presented with a discount coupon in one of these 3 categories: % off, free item, or fixed discounted price.

Google Maps For Android v4.7 Adds Support For The New Google Hotpot Recommendation Engine, Guns Straight For Yelp

Unveiled earlier today, Google's new service, called Hotpot, promises to recommend places to you based on an extremely simple rating system that allows scoring and ranking establishments from one to five stars. Additionally, you can rate individual characteristics, such as food, service, and atomsphere, as you can see below. Hotpot's release was accompanied by a simultaneous refresh of the Google Maps Android app (version 4.7), which brought along the fairly significant addition of Hotpot to the Places component of the app.
