Two weeks ago Yahoo debuted its Livetext app in five countries: Canada, France, Germany, the UK, and the US. Now it's expanding the service to the rest of the globe.Read More
Here's an idea. Let's take that video chatting thing that people do all the time using Skype, Hangouts, or FaceTime, and remove the sound. Huh, Yahoo is already doing that?
Yup, and the service is called Livetext. Yahoo has been testing it in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Ireland. Now the tech company is bringing its intriguing communications platform to five additional countries. There's Canada and the US in North America. France, Germany, and the rest of the UK have joined Ireland in Europe.
In Yahoo's video of Livetext in action, you can see how each sentence you type appears at the bottom of a video feed of whomever you're chatting with.Read More
Yahoo Messenger used to be one of the top ways for people to communicate via text, but its popularity has definitely waned in the mobile era. Yahoo has been looking for its next big messaging idea in recent years, and Livetext is its latest shot. This unusual video messaging app has gone live in Hong Kong without so much as an announcement blog post, but you can grab the app from APK Mirror right now.Read More
Android tablet users know what it's like to get stuck with a phone app stretched out to a large display. It's less of an issue today than it used to be, now that smartphones come with 1080p displays and apps sport visual elements that would look crisp on a television screen. But sometimes you're still left with an excess of white space or an interface that you can't spin horizontally, even though that's how you want to hold your tablet.
Well, Yahoo has updated its News Digest app to play along more nicely with Android tablets. The interface still looks similar to the highly stylized experience users have grown accustomed to on their phones, but now it's wider, and you get to swipe left and right.Read More
Aviate started out as a launcher that stood out as very different. It was purchased by Yahoo a few years back, and has since then been tied into several of Yahoo's other products like News Digest. The new v3.0 update is the most significant update yet, and it will probably upset most long-time Aviate users. Spaces have been replaced by a feature called Smart Stream and the whole UI looks much more like a regular launcher.Read More
Search engines are been there, done that these days. To really compete, you need your own voice assistant that can do the searching for us, then regurgitate this information using a friendly voice. Business Insider reports that, in a conference call to report Yahoo's first quarter earnings on Tuesday, CEO Marissa Mayer mentioned her company's plans to take on personal assistants such as Google Now, Apple's Siri, and Microsoft's Cortana. The site claims that the project is currently code-named Index.
On the call, Mayer said:
"Those products are really heavily differentiated both from each other as well as from the historic legacy products, and so that's really where we see an opportunity to play in something that's mobile.
The Flickr app got a substantial redesign not long ago, and it's not bad. The new version brings some additional features, including something mysterious and "sparkly." I'm not sure what that means, but there are some other, less cryptic features as well.Read More
Using a Yahoo email address isn't really "cool" anymore, but millions of people do. The Yahoo Mail app for Android is getting an update today, so maybe it's time to go back and fire up that old Yahoo account. You'll find the Yahoo Mail app wants to be a lot more than an inbox.
Flickr has updated its Android offering with a series of improvements, most notably a more appropriate two-column view in the activity feed for tablet users. Beyond the widescreen-specific feature addition, there are also enhancements to sharing within the app, cropping previously uploaded photos, and browsing with a fullscreen lightbox view.Read More
