Unlocking The Bootloader On Sony's Xperia Z3 And Z3 Compact Causes Poor Low-Light Camera Performance Thanks To DRM [Update: Sony Updates Policy Text]

You know those scary warnings that show up whenever you unlock the bootloader on a phone? "We can't be held responsible... blah blah... reduced functionality... blah... fiery death... blah blah blah." Sometimes they aren't kidding. Users who have unlocked the new Xperia Z3 Compact have found that low-light camera performance drops considerably. It turns out to be because of DRM in Sony's image signal processing.

Sony Releases 'Demand Great' Video Ad Campaign For Xperia Z3, Is Surprisingly OK

Sony Releases 'Demand Great' Video Ad Campaign For Xperia Z3, Is Surprisingly OK

With a new Sony smartphone comes a new Sony ad campaign, and the Z3's has just been released in the form of (so far) eight videos published on the company's Xperia YouTube channel. While seven of the spots are actually one and the same product storyline edited differently to showcase various features, one of the ads really did strike me as genuinely good, which is pasted below.

It's 3 minutes or so long, so it's a bit of a lengthy video as an ad, but I think Sony really nails the "product as hero" thing here with just the right mix of emotion (eg, not going overboard) and real human interest story.

PC Mag: The Sony Xperia Z3 Will Come To Verizon As The Xperia Z3v

For years now, we've been drooling over Sony's high-end hardware and gorgeous industrial design, only to be bummed since the phones rarely come to the United States. Sony and T-Mobile have a pretty good relationship, as evidenced by yesterday's announcement that the new Xperia Z3 would launch on the carrier in the US. But according to a recent post from PC Mag, Verizon may be getting some Sony phone hardware for the first time in years.

Sony Shows Off PlayStation 4 Remote Play For The Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, And Z3 Tablet Compact

Tucked into the flurry of news around Sony's trio of new Xperia Z3 devices was the fact that they'll be the first non-gaming gadgets to use the company's proprietary PlayStation 4 Remote Play system. The flagship Xperia Z3, high-powered "mini" Xperia Z3 Compact, and the 8-inch Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will be able to stream PS4 games and play them across a home Wi-Fi network later this year. The PS4 can already stream gameplay to the PlayStation Vita.

[IFA 2014] Sony Announces The Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia E3, And Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

Here at IFA 2014 in Berlin, Sony is announcing new entries to its Xperia smartphone line at all levels. The flagship Z series, last updated only six months ago at Mobile World Congress, has been bolstered with the Xperia Z3. This device is the tip top of Sony's line, though in terms of sheer hardware it's an evolution rather than a revolution. The 5.2-inch 1080p screen, Snapdragon 801 processor (bumped up to 2.5Ghz), and 20.7MP rear camera are similar to the last iteration, but the body is much thinner at 7.3mm.

Sony Xperia Z3 And Z3 Compact Supposedly Leaked Ahead Of An IFA Reveal, Photos And Specs Included

It's been less than six months since Sony announced the top-of-the-line Xperia Z2 back at Mobile World Congress, but it looks like the company may be ready to release yet another iteration at IFA in Berlin. [Rumor] Is This The Xperia Z3? Maybe Possibly

[Rumor] Is This The Xperia Z3? Maybe Possibly

Given that Sony chose IFA last year as its debut venue for the Xperia Z1 smartphone, then MWC for the Z2, it would make sense that a new device is well underway for this year's IFA, which will be happening just two short months from now. Perhaps it's just Sony's rapid iteration cycle, but the Z3 looks largely similar to the Z2, at least from the pictures we have of it so far in this alleged leak, which has a model number of L55t to the Z2's L50t, strongly suggesting its successor status.
