At over 50% off, the Wyze Cam v3 is a must-have smart home security essential

One of the best home security cameras available drops to just $20 this weekend

Having some sort of security system in place is practically a necessity these days, but building a home security system can be a pricey endeavor depending on what exactly ou need. Picking proper home security cameras is one of the first things you'll want to do, but these can range from downright cheap to expensive.

Wyze Cam v3 Black_5

Security camera maker Wyze came out last month with the Wyze Cam v3. It features a handful of improvements from v2 — enough of them to rank among our best home security camera picks — but, as with every other camera product the company puts out, it comes in only one color: white. Not the case for Black Friday weekend, though, as the company is putting out a limited run of its Wyze Cam v3 in black.

An unmissable price for one of our favorite pieces of security tech

From noise-canceling earbuds to robot vacuum cleaners, few tech firms offer as much bang for the buck as Wyze. Arguably the most impressive example of their value-for-money gear is the feature-packed Wyze Cam v3 security camera — and it’s now up for grabs for an even cheaper price on Amazon Prime Day.

All technology companies routinely face security concerns, working to squash bugs and ensuring any vulnerabilities are closed as soon as possible. There's a reason your phone receives a monthly security patch, and for the most part, it should be the same with all of your other devices. Whether through bug bounty programs or dedicated organizations, all tech companies rely on third parties to report security concerns. Unfortunately, a major player in the smart home ecosystem took much longer than anyone would want to patch significant flaws in its hardware.

If you’re familiar with the state of smart home security systems, you probably weren’t shocked when Wyze launched its Cam Plus subscription in 2020. It’s become the standard business model for companies within the space, and as features associated with recurring costs roll out, like storage and AI image processing in the cloud, the money for that has to come from somewhere. Subscriptions also give companies more dependable year-round income so they don’t have to rely solely on hardware sales to stay profitable — a point Wyze made in its video about almost going bankrupt.

Wyze has come a long way from making "too-good-to-be-true" home security solutions — some moments more unfortunate than others — but the forward path to sustainability means making great subscription services at affordable prices. With that said, the company is now offering a new name-your-own-price subscription tier for Wyze Cam Plus.

Wyze cams are notoriously low-cost while offering a solid set of features, and the v3 was a great upgrade to the previous generations for only slightly more money. If you’ve been thinking about picking up some cameras for use outdoors, the Cam v3 bundled with a spotlight has been inching down in price every day and currently rests at just $37.34, about 30% off the retail price.

Wyze has no shortage of fantastic gadgets that help make your home a little smarter without breaking the bank. The company is celebrating its birthday this week with the launch of a couple of new products. While it's nothing as groundbreaking as Wyze's foray into robovacs, these announcements make up some pretty cool accessories that might fit right into your existing smart home setup.

Wyze is raising prices — again

Shipping will also be included in prices going forward, though this is still a price bump on top of that

Last year, Wyze made a whole lot of noise about how the new Cam v3 would deliver a bunch of enhancements for the same $20 price. Come launch day, the company couldn't hold true to its word, raising prices to $24 (before shipping) or requiring that you pay more on the side for a subscription service to get that original price. The company even buried those original claims regarding pricing when we called them out for it. Now Wyze is back with another price bump: The Wyze Cam v3 will cost $33. At least shipping is included this time.

Wyze buries previous claim about keeping Cam v3 price down

No matter what, it's more than the last model cost

The Wyze Cam v3 is finally available for purchase after a short launch-day website snafu, but that $20 launch price the company told us during our review hasn't quite panned out — at least, not the way any of us thought it would. Right now, the only way to way to buy the camera is with a Cam Plus subscription, which can cost you almost twice as much, depending on how you do it. And when sales open more widely later, it still won't be $20.

Wyze Cam v3 review: The best $20 you'll spend this year

The best deal in smart home hardware just got even better

Wyze has been on a bit of a spree lately, expanding into additional markets with products like its new noise-cancelling headphones and its first smart thermostat, but through all that, there's no forgetting the company's roots: selling very capable, very affordable smart cameras. For a mere $20, shoppers could pick up Wyze's first-gen camera with motion detection, free cloud storage, and support for local microSD recording. Later models added pan and tilt motion control and even full-wireless operation, all while keeping prices tantalizingly low. Now we're turning our attention back to where it started as the stalwart Wyze Cam gets a new v3 hardware refresh with drastically improved light sensitivity, support for higher frame rates, and protection against the elements — all for the same $20 sticker price.

Wyze makes some of the most affordable smart home gadgets you'll find, including cameras, locks, and thermostats. The company even has a pair of ANC headphones in the works, but now it's returning to its roots with an update that gives the basic Wyze camera some major improvements.
