Watch an Alphabet-owned delivery drone get attacked by a bird

The drone took the battle, but the ravens won the war

The idea of drone-based deliveries has become such a mainstream concept that even Parks and Recreation managed to joke about it during its final season set in the far-flung future of 2017. While it has yet to become widely used, other companies — including Google — have tested similar technology for years. Unfortunately, these companies forgot to plan for the one threat that could potentially bring down the entire operation: birds.

Will your LG phone get an Android 11 or 12 update?

Here's a list of all the promises LG made after exiting the phone business

I never thought I'd see LG shut its mobile division before Sony or HTC, but here we are. The South Korean company officially announced its exit from the smartphone market a few days ago. While the company wasn't explicit about the software support situation at the time, some details have emerged since.

When LG shut down its mobile division last week, a few details remained unclear about its existing products. We initially speculated that the latest flagships should be in for at least another big upgrade to Android 12, but now LG has shed some light on its plans going forward. It pledges to update most of its flagships for up to three years.

LG support site details a very pokey Android 11 update plan

Some phones have a timeline as late as Q4 2021

So far, the only notable LG devices we've seen updated to Android 11 are the V60 and the Velvet (in South Korea, anyway). According to a support page on LG's German site, a few more phones will get the big software bump ... just don't expect them to be especially timely. Why would you, at this point?

Pixel 5 and LG Wing are getting a free 5G C-band upgrade

More of those five gee megahertz courtesy of band n77 support

The Pixel 5 and LG Wing don't have too much in common — outside maybe the fact that neither will sell very well — but both phones are going to get a 5G-related upgrade. FCC documents indicate that both Google and LG have been granted permission for the phones to access the new 5G Band n77 freed up as part of the C-band auction. With nothing more than a software update, both devices can connect to the new 5G frequency once US carriers start using it.

LG Wing receives system update with new screen-swapping features

Making the most of the Wing's two screens

The LG Wing is one of the weirder phones released lately, with a swiveling design that yields two usable screens (though one is smaller than the other). LG is still working on new ways to utilize the dual-display layout, and now an update going out to Verizon subscribers includes some of the company's new ideas.

Google certifies 5 more Android phones for ARCore support

Augmented reality takes on higher importance during a pandemic

Now that more people are staying at home these days, augmented reality has the potential to become even more important. AR may not be as novel as it once was, but that doesn't mean Google isn't continually expanding its ARCore SDK to more devices to enable them to seamlessly access AR experiences like its virtual zoo.

LG wants you to believe people will still be using the Wing in three years

It's on billboards in the trailer for pandemic thriller "Songbird" and we couldn't think of a worse product placement strategy

We didn't ask for a film exploring the idea of a society split apart by their immunity (or lack thereof) to a disease undergoing pandemic spread, but hey, we're getting one from Adam Mason and Michael Bay next year called "Songbird." It imagines a Los Angeles of the near future with mass quarantine camps, the privileged few with immunity bracelets, and a mutated SARS-CoV-2 dominating the storyline. It also has quite a bit of product placement for the very old (at least by that point) LG Wing.

LG Wing: Best deals, pricing, trade-in values, and availability

You've got three places to buy this oddball

Whatever you have to say about the LG Wing — we've certainly had our say here at Android Police — it's certainly a one-of-a-kind machine. From today, you've got a total of three places where you can buy this screen-swiveling phone in the United States and we have all the details.

Phones have gotten boring in the last few years, but things are getting weird again, and thank goodness. I have been doing this long enough to remember the last time phones got weird—I've reviewed phones with spring-loaded keyboards, tablet docks, curved bodies, and all manner of multi-screen configurations. After settling on the flat glass slab form factor, OEMs are finally starting to take more risks. No phone better exemplifies this trend than the LG Wing. While LG has been pushing dual-screen accessories for a while, the Wing is the first modern LG phone that integrates a second screen in the handset. The configuration is, well... it swivels.

T-Mobile welcomes the LG Wing with a BOGO offer starting November 6

If you get two of them, does that make you a T-Mobird?

Add T-Mobile to the list of American carriers taking a chance on the LG Wing as it plans on selling the new-fangled swiveling phone starting November 6, just like AT&T is. Unlike Ma Bell, however, this carrier will try to sell its customers two Wings for the price of one.

LG officially revealed its weird swivel-screened phone last month, dubbed the LG Wing. It's one of the more interesting takes on a dual-screen device we've seen yet, though the $999 price is a lot to pay for an unproven form factor. Thankfully, with AT&T selling the phone, there's a chance you could pay a bit less money.

Verizon pre-orders for LG's trivially swivel-ly phone begin Thursday

MSRP of $1,000 unless you're upgrading or moving numbers

There isn't a dual-screen smartphone quite like the LG Wing and after weeks of build-up and anticipation, consumers will be able to put down money for this swivel-out, lit-up board-on-a-board starting this week at Verizon. And if the machinery alone isn't enough for you to make a pre-order, the carrier is dealing out some saccharides.

Video shows how the pivot 'wing' in the LG Wing works

We've got the 'how' but we're still waiting on the 'why'

The LG Wing is the latest consumer handheld device to test the limits of people's wills to not go click-clack back and forth while flipping — or, in this case, swiveling — it open. With two screens, a pop-up camera, and a lot of screen real estate to go around, some will have questions about its durability and the company is trying to address them with performative CGI in a new video.

Following leak upon leak (and a pre-announcement), LG finally made one of its weirdest smartphones yet official during a live event. The LG Wing is a dual-screen handset with a swiveling mechanism — you can rotate its display by 90 degrees, revealing another smaller one underneath it. LG hopes that this unique form factor will help with multitasking, like when you're navigating in your car while listening to music or watching a video while chatting with friends. To make it even more unique, LG has also added a pop-up selfie cam.

We've already seen LG's different-for-the-sake-of-being-different Wing leaked in two videos, but LG has just published a video teaser for the highly unusual phone. It's slated to be unveiled September 14th.

Dual-screen LG Wing gets leaked again, rumored to cost $1,000 in US

The secondary screen swings out when you need to be a multitasking champ

While much of the smartphone industry looks to folding screens for the future of handset design, LG sure seems to have different tastes. Though LG phones have long had secondary displays in some form, the last few have stepped that up with full-size Dual Screen accessories.  Earlier this year we heard about a new effort that would try something else entirely — now a short video of this alleged LG Wing has surfaced, giving us a look at a rotating dual-screen phone that’s unlike anything else out there.

It's a concept that's been teased by megacorporations for years yet has only had meaningful progress in recent years: delivery by drone. For Google, Project Wing was conceived some 6 years ago as a way to shoot dog food from a local warehouse to your house. Today, the FAA announced that Wing, now the bona fide Alphabet company, has become the first drone delivery company to receive an Air Carrier Certification, meaning that it can now legally do business in the United States.

As part of Google's big 2015 reorganization, many of the divisions tucked away inside Google became their own companies under the Alphabet umbrella. For example, the Google X's self-driving car project became Waymo. Now, two more wacky former Google projects are getting the same opportunity. Project Wing and Loon are both becoming Alphabet businesses.
