WhatsApp starts showing a 'Mark as read' button on notifications for some users

Not to be outdone by Telegram's new "Mark as read" button on notifications, WhatsApp is rolling the same feature out to some users now. Not everyone is able to see this shortcut, even those of us on the latest beta, so it appears the function is enabled via a server-side switch.

WhatsApp group audio and video calls are now rolling out to everyone

After leaks and teardown revelations aplenty, WhatsApp group calls were finally formally revealed at Facebook's F8 developer conference in early May. By the end of the month, the feature had started showing up for some. Now, WhatsApp has announced that group audio and video calls are rolling out to all users.

[Pssst, Gmail, You Listening?] Telegram 4.9 added a 'Mark as read' button in notifications

When you get bombarded by notifications throughout the day, the most useful tool at your disposal is a "Mark as read" button. Because most notifications these days can be expanded, it's easy to read the entire content of a message sent through SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, or Gmail. But dismissing the notification doesn't mark the message as read: it will show as unread if you open the app or, worse yet, will resurface if you get other notifications from the same app. That's why a quick way to mark messages as read is not just welcome, but also crucial. And Telegram has finally seen the light.

WhatsApp legal threats target 3rd party apps interfacing through standard Android APIs

So much of what we do on our smartphone is driven by services, as companies provide us with access to things like cloud storage, social-media publishing, and instant messaging. And while many of us default to accessing these services through their official apps, plenty of third-party alternatives exist. Some of the companies behind these services are more tolerant of those alternatives than others, and we've already seen WhatsApp take heavy-handed action against such software. Now a new round of legal threats is underway, and this time the targets don't seem to be doing anything particularly objectionable.

Tip: WhatsApp can re-download deleted media, hide it from your gallery

Dear Android Police readers, I must apologize for not being as dedicated as before to WhatsApp's teeny changes in the past few weeks. I won't try to find excuses, but I will promise to be more vigilant and start making it up by telling you about two small features you may not have noticed yet. One of them is probably a few months old, the other is more recent.

Gboard Smart Replies being tested for other apps including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Android Messages

Google's been throwing its Smart Replies at pretty much every app or venue capable of accepting them, from Android Messages to Gmail. It even has a standalone app that introduces the shortcuts—and their occasionally borderline-offensive responses—to third-party app notifications. Now Gboard is testing out adding the same feature to other applications like Facebook and WhatsApp.

WhatsApp group audio and video calls start rolling out on Android

At the start of the month, Mark Zuckerberg announced at the Facebook F8 conference that group calls were coming to WhatsApp. The feature has been discovered in countless leaks and teardowns before, so the news was not a surprise to anyone. Over the past few days, reports have started springing up of group calls showing on iOS, and now it looks like the feature has also made its way to Android. But beware, this a server-side update so not everyone has it.
