WhatsApp now has picture-in-picture video calling and text status updates in the stable channel

In the last couple of months, WhatsApp added a couple of new features to its beta channel for some final user testing, and now those features are deemed ready for the prime time. There's a picture-in-picture mode for video calls and the ability to set text only, self-destructing status updates.

Verified WhatsApp business accounts are now official

To US readers, WhatsApp may not seem like much of a big deal. Things are different elsewhere, however, and with more than 1 billion daily active users it's easy to understand why Facebook paid so much money to acquire the messaging service. After a number of rumors and clues, business accounts similar to what you can already find in the Facebook Messenger app are now coming to WhatsApp.

Google v7.10 beta reveals Bisto-like headphones to be made by partners, details about hardware buttons and capabilities, and much more [APK Teardown]

Yesterday was a busy day with the official announcement of Android Oreo and our sun playing a short game of peekaboo behind the moon. Yesterday also saw the release of a brand new version of the Google app to the beta channel. After a bit of digging, there aren't any notable changes jumping out at us, but a teardown of the APK provides a monstrous amount of information about a mystery device called Bisto. There's plenty here, so let's dig straight into the juicy bits!

WhatsApp Web shows new Status, supports Slack-like emoji insertion

We don't often cover WhatsApp Web here since it's not exactly Android, but it's related enough to the Android app that we do make an exception every now and then when there's something worth talking about. Today is one of those examples, but it's worth pointing out that some of these changes aren't new and have been there for a while — maybe even for a month or two. But again, we had to wait until there was enough news to warrant a post.

[Update: Live in beta for everyone] WhatsApp is testing colorful text status updates similar to Facebook's

You know how all of a sudden your Facebook feed started filling up with status updates that had colorful backgrounds? That might soon start happening on WhatsApp. The feature, which started rolling out to Facebook's Android users late last year then spread to other platforms a couple of months ago, is now being tested in WhatsApp's new status screen. Perhaps WhatsApp hopes it will convince people to start using those new statuses more - 99% of my friends don't bother with them and I've heard the same from lots of people.

WhatsApp beta briefly tested then removed photo filters

Facebook's strategy lately seems to be to offer the same features (and copy Snapchat) on all its services and let users just choose where they want to use this or that option. Instagram got Stories, WhatsApp got ephemeral statuses, Facebook Messenger got that weird Day thing... none of it makes sense to me because I like to use each app for a specific purpose and not confuse myself with overlapping options, but what do I know?! In that vein, the latest addition to WhatsApp seems to be image filters.

The feature showed up on beta version 2.17.297 but was quickly removed with a follow-up version 2.17.298.

[Update: Better now] WhatsApp beta adds launcher app shortcuts, though they're pretty useless

It took nearly a year, but WhatsApp has just added launcher app shortcuts on Android Nougat (or Marshmallow if you use a compatible launcher like Nova and Action). Thing is, the functions that WhatsApp decided to elevate to shortcut status are... kind of useless.

You get a shortcut to launch the Camera, because WhatsApp is all about the new Status feature even though out of my 500+ contacts, I only see 12 new status shares every day.

WhatsApp has 1 Billion daily active users who send over 55B messages every day

WhatsApp keeps on growing and growing. In my neck of the woods, it's the way everyone communicates these days. Messages are sent through it, groups are made for friends to share memes and funny photos, families use it to stay in touch and share photos, customers communicate with businesses through it — heck, even my patients ask me medical questions over it! Voice messages are used like asynchronous phone calls or when your message is better conveyed with voice instead of text, and WhatsApp voice and video calls are quickly overtaking phone calls. The service is immediate without being intrusive, and it's so ubiquitous that you don't even think of email, SMS, or other ways of communicating unless you realize the person you're trying to reach isn't on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp beta adds a picture-in-picture mode for video calls on Android O

WhatsApp was updated to version 2.17.265 on the beta channel yesterday and as most times, it didn't seem like the new version brought anything new to the table. But it turns out that this isn't the case this time; you just need to be on the newest and hottest version of Android to notice the change. WhatsApp now support picture-in-picture video calls on Android O.

When you start a video call on Android Nougat and below then tap back, the call goes into the background and the video gets paused while the audio continues and you go back to your text conversation and can do other stuff on your phone.

[Update: In Stable Version] WhatsApp lets you send any file type, bundles shared media, and modifies the call screen

It's quite fitting that the first article I write when I get back from my honeymoon (wipe your tears, ladies and gentlemen, this one's taken) is about WhatsApp. For the past years, I've reported about the app's different interface and functionality changes here on Android Police and while I was sipping cava by the sea or emphatically nodding "Si, si," to everyone in Spain while putting my new husband's feet to the test (not like that, you dirty-minded people, we were walking a lot everywhere), WhatsApp rolled out a couple of new things to its app...
