WhatsApp now rolling out live location sharing

Live location sharing is pretty popular. Google Maps added it back in March, followed by Facebook Messenger the same month and Snapchat in June. Given that Messenger has had it for a few months, it makes sense that the feature would eventually make its way to Facebook-owned WhatsApp.

[Update: APK Download] First look at WhatsApp Business: Android app, landline number registration, and multiple accounts options

Although we've been hearing about WhatsApp Business forever, the service was officially announced one month ago and if you paid close attention to the FAQ page, you would have seen a survey where you could sign up to test WhatsApp Business. I totally missed that, but reader Hüseyin Filiz applied and thanks to him, we have our first look at WhatsApp Business.

The service is still in testing, so WhatsApp is asking for feedback from early testers regarding account setup, data migration from their existing WhatsApp app, automatic responses, and analytics.

WhatsApp introduces its own emoji set in the latest Android beta v2.17.364

WhatsApp has always used iOS' emoji designs and fonts in all of its apps. Whether you're on iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Symbian, or desktop, you would see the same emojis independent of your device's built-in emojis. That created a unified approach to avoid any confusing moments like, "you sent me a gun!" and "I said it was a water gun!" However, it looks like WhatsApp is now breaking the shackles of its iOS emojis... somewhat.

In the latest Android beta v2.17.364, WhatsApp introduced a new set of emojis that are its very own. They look like iOS and Android Oreo emojis had a baby and from every comment we received, no one is enthused about them.

WhatsApp is now blocked in China

China has a long history of blocking or limiting access to websites, especially social networks and Western-owned sites. Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and many Google services are currently blocked in mainland China. WhatsApp has been partially-blocked in the past (for a while, video chats and some other functionality wasn't working), but now the entire service seems to be non-functional.

[Neat] "OK Google send voice message" records and sends WhatsApp audio clips

You know what has puzzled me for months? You can say, "OK Google, send a message," and it will listen and transcribe everything you say, but in apps that already have a voice/audio messaging feature, why go through all the trouble? Or at least why not offer the option to just send the audio clip of what you said, as it is, without trying to transcribe it? That would work wonderfully in WhatsApp (and Telegram, Viber, Allo, and other apps) in situations where you either think the speech-to-text won't pick up on some of your words or where you want to say something in a language that isn't supported.

WhatsApp Beta brings granular Storage Usage management to Android

For a long time now, WhatsApp has offered granular storage control over its chats on iOS, but the feature was nowhere to be found on Android. You could either manually delete an entire conversation and its corresponding media or select multiple messages to delete them and their media, but that was it until WhatsApp beta finally added proper storage management a couple of days ago.

Head over to Settings -> Data and storage usage -> Storage usage (new menu) and wait a few seconds for all of your conversations to populate and their data to be tallied. Once done, you'll see a list of your chats sorted by how much space they take on your device (largest to smallest).

WhatsApp now has picture-in-picture video calling and text status updates in the stable channel

In the last couple of months, WhatsApp added a couple of new features to its beta channel for some final user testing, and now those features are deemed ready for the prime time. There's a picture-in-picture mode for video calls and the ability to set text only, self-destructing status updates.

Verified WhatsApp business accounts are now official

To US readers, WhatsApp may not seem like much of a big deal. Things are different elsewhere, however, and with more than 1 billion daily active users it's easy to understand why Facebook paid so much money to acquire the messaging service. After a number of rumors and clues, business accounts similar to what you can already find in the Facebook Messenger app are now coming to WhatsApp.

Yesterday was a busy day with the official announcement of Android Oreo and our sun playing a short game of peekaboo behind the moon. Yesterday also saw the release of a brand new version of the Google app to the beta channel. There's plenty here, so let's dig straight into the juicy bits!

WhatsApp Web shows new Status, supports Slack-like emoji insertion

We don't often cover WhatsApp Web here since it's not exactly Android, but it's related enough to the Android app that we do make an exception every now and then when there's something worth talking about. Today is one of those examples, but it's worth pointing out that some of these changes aren't new and have been there for a while — maybe even for a month or two. But again, we had to wait until there was enough news to warrant a post.
