Mobvoi unveils two updated Wear OS smartwatches: Ticwatch E2 and S2

Chinese AI firm Mobvoi has been a shining light in the generally underwhelming Android Wear/Wear OS space, and today it's announcing two new products. The TicWatch E2 and S2 (standing for Express and Sport) are follow-ups to the company's most affordable smartwatches, with updated designs, bigger batteries, and Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 chips (but not the new 3100).

Dark Sky brings hyperlocal weather information to Wear OS

Checking the weather is one of the features I use most on my phone. For years, I had a widget dedicated to just that on my homescreen, a layout I abandoned only a short time ago. When it comes to wearables, you have a couple of options in this area. Some watches come with pre-built faces that include weather info, you can build your own in something like Pujie, or install a separate app. Those who opt for the latter now have a new entrant to consider. Dark Sky has come to Wear OS, and it's a free upgrade for all existing subscribers.

TicWatch users can now set Google Fit as their default left swipe app

The TicWatch Pro is a pretty good smartwatch, as much as any SD Wear 2100 watch running Wear OS can be, anyway. One complaint about it was that you were forced to use Mobvoi's own health app as the default swipe left screen in Wear 2.0 (to the right of your watchface), but that's thankfully no longer the case.

LG Watch W7 review: A smartwatch that shouldn't be ignored

If we're to listen to complaints about Wear OS, the one thing everybody agrees on is that OEMs should try new things. That's why it's interesting to see that LG's announcement of the Watch W7 instantly became the most criticized smartwatch of 2018 — possibly ever. It had an old chipset, a small-ish battery, and hands that obscured the screen. The watch was mocked so relentlessly, we had our doubts that it would ever come out.

But does it really deserve so much hate? There are certainly some compromises and problems, but when you start to consider that the W7 also comes with solutions for some of the common complaints about smartwatches, it might have some potential. I've been using the Watch W7 for a little while and I think there's actually a lot to like about this thing.

LG Watch W7 drops to $220 ($230 off), quite possibly the biggest smartwatch flop of 2018

LG's announcement of the Watch W7 was met with jeers and derision. That was not only because mechanical hands on a smartwatch are a bit silly, but LG wanted a whopping $450 for the device. That was a tough sell in a world where Android smartwatches have yet to prove their utility, but that price didn't last long. After dropping almost immediately to $250, the Lg Watch Wy is now down another $30.

Facer v5.0 adds new watch face partners, a premium subscription, and more

What good is a smartwatch without some fancy custom watch faces to go with it? Facer has been one of the best sources for cusotmizable watch faces since the days before Google supported third-party watch faces. The app is forging ahead, even as interest in smartwatches has waned. The big v5.0 update adds more designers, including some traditional watchmakers. There's also a new premium subscription option that includes the full catalog of watch faces.
