Xiaomi Mi Watch is a blocky Apple Watch lookalike running a custom version of Wear OS

Xiaomi today announced the Mi Note 10 with a 108MP camera, but it also took the stage to introduce its first smartwatch based on its own custom Wear OS interface, the Mi Watch. Its software and exterior do look quite similar to the Apple Watch, although the device's edges are much blockier. Other than that, it's pretty much standard Wear OS hardware sporting a Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor and LTE connectivity.

It's 2019, and some Wear OS watches still haven't figured out daylight savings

Google may have just purchased Fitbit, but it still has a wearable platform of its own to take care of — Wear OS. Despite its wide array of capabilities that go beyond merely displaying the correct time, that function remains the main utility of a device strapped to your wrist. It's sad to see that during the switch to standard time, some watches' always-on displays kept showing daylight saving hours.

New Moto360 coming in December for $350, but it won't be made by Motorola

Of all the things we expected to come out of Lenovo's Motorola this year — mediocre modular phones, a flank of mid-rangers, and a foldable to behold — we did not think a new Wear OS smartwatch would be one. That said, we do have a 3rd-gen Moto360 (no space, as styled) to wait for, but it doesn't look to have been manufactured by Motorola.

Fossil Sport picks up new colors, drops to $200 ($75 off)

In his review, our very own Corbin found the Fossil Sport to be an easy recommendation for anyone in need of a Wear OS smartwatch. It remains an excellent choice to this day, and now Fossil is sweetening the deal with the introduction of some new color options.

Fossil Sport Gen 4 on sale at a new low of $104 ($45 off)

For as much shade Wear OS gets — either through its half-baked implementations or Google's perceived attrition — you can't deny it has some value points. Namely, it's got a decent interface you'd want to use on a smartwatch with a price floor way down from those Apple Watches. Today, that floor's been lowered further with the help of Fossil, where you can grab a 4th-gen Fossil Sport for nearly 60% off MSRP.

Fossil's Gen 5 watches can now answer calls when paired to iPhones, a first for Wear OS

Even though Google has gone though a lot of effort to make Wear OS watches compatible with both Android and iOS devices, they remain second-class citizens on Apple's platform, mostly due to limitations placed on non-system apps by iOS. One of those limitations is finally going away, as long as you have one of Fossil's newest smartwatches.

Permanent Proxy enables Wear OS Google Pay in unlisted countries

Although everyone here at Android Police is passionate about Google's goodies, it is no secret how we feel about Wear OS —  fundamentally flawed, embarrassing, and persistently lagging behind the competition. Not surprisingly, Wear OS makes up less than 12% of smartwatch sales in the US. One of the most glaring misses by Google is the distressingly low number of countries that support Google Pay on Wear OS watches — compared to Samsung's 24 and Apple's 57, Google Pay is only accepted in 11 countries. Thanks to an app called Permanent Proxy by XDA forum member Jolan Rensen, however, you can now activate and use Google Pay in an unlisted country.

Gen 4 Fossil Sport smartwatches are as low as $144 (up to $131 off)

When he reviewed Fossil's Wear 3100-powered Sport smartwatch in December, Corbin called it "the best Wear OS has to offer." It's got a lot going for it, like always-on heart rate monitoring, Google Pay compatibility, and a sleek design. If that speaks to you, now's a great time to pick one up — both the men's and women's variants are deeply discounted on Amazon.

Misfit Vapor X review: Great looking smartwatch ruined by older hardware

After debuting and focusing on activity trackers, Misfit was bought by Fossil and started expanding its portfolio a few years ago to include smartwatches. Its efforts have been mitigated though, and those familiar enough with the Wear OS landscape have noticed how late to the game Misfit's releases have often been.

The first Vapor garnered a lot of hype but lost most of its shine by the time it was finally released. The Vapor 2 came a year later, added the missing NFC and GPS, but was still using an older Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor. This time around, the Vapor X corrects that last misstep but still feels outdated thanks to 512MB of RAM — the same specs as last year's Fossil Sport — instead of the 1GB of RAM we find in Fossil's newer Gen 5 watches.
