Fossil's Gen 5 watches can now answer calls when paired to iPhones, a first for Wear OS

Even though Google has gone though a lot of effort to make Wear OS watches compatible with both Android and iOS devices, they remain second-class citizens on Apple's platform, mostly due to limitations placed on non-system apps by iOS. One of those limitations is finally going away, as long as you have one of Fossil's newest smartwatches.

Permanent Proxy enables Wear OS Google Pay in unlisted countries

Although everyone here at Android Police is passionate about Google's goodies, it is no secret how we feel about Wear OS —  fundamentally flawed, embarrassing, and persistently lagging behind the competition. Not surprisingly, Wear OS makes up less than 12% of smartwatch sales in the US. One of the most glaring misses by Google is the distressingly low number of countries that support Google Pay on Wear OS watches — compared to Samsung's 24 and Apple's 57, Google Pay is only accepted in 11 countries. Thanks to an app called Permanent Proxy by XDA forum member Jolan Rensen, however, you can now activate and use Google Pay in an unlisted country.

Gen 4 Fossil Sport smartwatches are as low as $144 (up to $131 off)

When he reviewed Fossil's Wear 3100-powered Sport smartwatch in December, Corbin called it "the best Wear OS has to offer." It's got a lot going for it, like always-on heart rate monitoring, Google Pay compatibility, and a sleek design. If that speaks to you, now's a great time to pick one up — both the men's and women's variants are deeply discounted on Amazon.

Misfit Vapor X review: Great looking smartwatch ruined by older hardware

After debuting and focusing on activity trackers, Misfit was bought by Fossil and started expanding its portfolio a few years ago to include smartwatches. Its efforts have been mitigated though, and those familiar enough with the Wear OS landscape have noticed how late to the game Misfit's releases have often been.

The first Vapor garnered a lot of hype but lost most of its shine by the time it was finally released. The Vapor 2 came a year later, added the missing NFC and GPS, but was still using an older Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor. This time around, the Vapor X corrects that last misstep but still feels outdated thanks to 512MB of RAM — the same specs as last year's Fossil Sport — instead of the 1GB of RAM we find in Fossil's newer Gen 5 watches.

The Movado Connect 2.0 is a premium Wear OS watch, available for pre-order starting at $500

Google's Wear OS platform isn't in the best shape these days, but there are still ample choices if you want to have Google on your wrist. You can even spend an obscene amount of money on a Google-powered smartwatch like the new Movado Connect 2.0. It starts at $495 (slightly cheaper than the first-gen), but Movado is notable for being one of the few non-Fossil companies still working with Wear OS.

Opinion: The Apple Watch Series 5 embarrasses Wear OS yet again — it's time for changes

Apple just announced its fifth-generation Apple Watch, and no surprise, it puts Google's Wear OS ecosystem to shame. Even with a headstart on wearables, Google has made such slow progress that Apple easily dominates the market. With the Series 5, Apple has adopted one of the last features that set Wear OS apart. We've waited years for Wear OS to click, and it's simply not happening. It's time for Google to rethink its approach to Wear OS before it slides completely into irrelevance.

[Update: 4G can now be activated] Mobvoi launches a revamped version of the TicWatch Pro with 4G/LTE

Wear OS smartwatches are seen as sub-par compared to the competition, mainly because most of them still use outdated processors or lack key features. With the TicWatch Pro, Mobvoi managed to design one of the most attractive intelligent timepieces powered by Google's OS on the market. However, despite its good selling points, the product lacked LTE connectivity, which prevented owners from using all their watch's features on the go. Thankfully, the manufacturer is announcing the TicWatch Pro 4G/LTE, which builds up on its predecessor's specs and adds 4G functionality on top, confirming the leak we reported last month.

Gen 4 Fossil Venture HR Wear OS smartwatches are down to $175 ($100 off)

Fossil is one of the leading Wear OS smartwatch manufacturers, and I personally like the brand's timepieces for their stylish design and overall features. Among the company's top products is the fourth-generation Venture, which came out a year ago but still features decent specs and great looks. Four of the timepiece's variants have just gone one sale for $175, which is $100 off their original retail price.
