Clarification: T-Mobile Says The Nexus 6P Is Not Band 12 Certified Yet, They're Still Working On It

Yesterday, the Nexus 6P appeared on T-Mobile's website as part of a list of devices certified for band 12 LTE on the operator's network. While we did not have direct confirmation from T-Mobile at the time, we went ahead and let you all know because, hey, it probably meant something. We reached out to T-Mobile on Twitter (along with readers) and have since had it clarified to us that this page does not reflect the current status of the 6P's band 12 certification.

T-Mobile social evangelist Des clarified on Twitter that the certification process was ongoing and that T-Mobile would have more to share about the band 12 status for the 6P "soon."

The Nexus 6P Is Now Certified For Band 12 On T-Mobile

Soon after the announcements of Google's 2015 Nexus phones, it came to light that both of them would have band 12 on T-Mobile's network disabled at launch pending certification from the carrier. It now appears that the wait is over, at least for the Nexus 6P.

T-Mobile has now added Google's larger 2015 flagship to its list of devices compatible with band 12. What we don't know, however, is when owners will get the required software update to enable the functionality.

[Updated] T-Mobile Says The Nexus 5X And 6P Won't Have Band 12 LTE Support (For Now)

Taking a look at the spec sheet for the new Nexus phones, you might notice that the LTE section lists band 12. However, this is by no means a guarantee of actual support anymore. T-Mobile has been leaning on unlocked device makers to block access to band 12 unless they get certified for VoLTE, and it looks like the new Nexus phones lack that. According to T-Mobile's Twitter account, neither phone will have band 12 enabled at launch.

Update: Here's a screenshot, courtesy of an Android Police reader.

As it turns out, the Android 4.4.4 update for the AT&T HTC One M8 that we covered over a week ago never actually rolled out to devices. The company pulled its page down, which suggests that it went up sooner than anticipated. HTC Vice President of Product Management Mo Versi took to Twitter over the weekend to announce that the OTA was actually due out this week, and that it would include both VoLTE support and the HTC Eye Experience software enhancements.

Verizon and AT&T are getting together to take over the world make voice over LTE (VoLTE) work across carriers. That means you will soon be able to make calls from one carrier to the other using LTE rather than falling back to 3G technologies.

VoLTE is an all-IP calling technology that aims to improve voice quality and add additional services. For example, Verizon's Advanced Calling 1.0 program includes HD voice calls with VoLTE and video calling. The problem, however, it that VoLTE currently only works within a carrier network.
