Ultimate Ears BLAST and MEGABLAST review: Great sound comes at a price

Those in the market for a Bluetooth speaker in the $100-200 range will surely have heard of Ultimate Ears for the company's popular BOOM 2 and MEGABOOM speakers. But if you're looking for a newer, more premium alternative, Logitech/Ultimate Ears has come out with the BLAST and MEGABLAST - not replacements for the BOOM series, but upmarket stablemates.

The main talking points of these two new speakers concern Alexa integration and superior sound. The $229.99 BLAST and $299.99 MEGABLAST sound very good, and they can get seriously loud when cranked all the way up. The charging dock is a nice touch, but it costs an extra $40.

[Deal Alert] UE BOOM 2 now $99 (over 50% off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target

Ultimate Ears makes some of the best Bluetooth portable speakers around, and though they're a little on the expensive side, we usually think they're a good buy for anyone looking for a portable speaker that's capable of putting out some very respectable sound. One of those speakers is the UE BOOM 2, which sounded great when it first came out and can still hold its own against others on the market, despite having been launched a tad over 2 years ago now.

The MEGABOOM may no longer be Ultimate Ears' most powerful Bluetooth speaker, but it still packs plenty a punch. It's still one of our favorite speakers, and for good reason - it's great across the board. Now, you can pick one up in the interestingly-named 'Purpley' color for just $146.99, a whopping $153 off the MSRP, from Best Buy. This is the lowest price we've seen for a brand-new unit.

But if you were holding off on buying a BOOM or MEGABOOM because they don't have Amazon Alexa integration or WiFi and you maybe want some better sound, UE has the solution for you: the new BLAST and MEGABLAST.

Alexa integration for Logitech's UE BOOM 2 and UE MEGABOOM is now available to everyone

A few months ago, Logitech released beta versions of its Ultimate Ears companion apps for the BOOM 2 and MEGABOOM on the Play Store. The key difference between the betas and their stable cousins was the ability to integrate with Amazon Alexa. The stable apps have now been updated to include the same functionality.

[Deal Alert] Get a UE ROLL 2 Bluetooth speaker in Sugarplum for just $45 ($55 off) on Amazon

Dual speaker-equipped phones like the HTC U11, Nexus 6P, and Axon 7 may have better sound than their competitors, but the fact of the matter is that a phone's sound will never beat out a standalone speaker's. So if you want good portable sound and don't yet own a Bluetooth speaker, the UE ROLL 2 may be worth considering. Given its capabilities, the ROLL 2 is a no-brainer at just $45, which is less than half of its MSRP.

[Deal Alert] Get a refurbished UE MEGABOOM for just $129.99 at Best Buy ($170 off MSRP)

Here at AP, we're quite fond of Ultimate Ears' MEGABOOM Bluetooth speaker. In our review of it from back in 2015, we found that it was tough, sounded great, and had a nice companion app. The only major sticking point - its MSRP of $299.99 (which it still retails for, by the way) makes it pretty pricey for a Bluetooth speaker. However, Best Buy is currently selling refurbished units of the MEGABOOM for just $129.99 a pop, making it a much more enticing value.

[Update: $50 at Verizon in all colors] [Deal Alert] Get a UE ROLL 2 Bluetooth speaker for just $49.99 ($50 off) from Amazon

Smartphones have never produced particularly good sound through their speakers. Sure, phones like the older HTC Ones, the Nexus 6 and 6P, and the Axon 7 have dual front-facing ones, but none of those are any match for a true, dedicated speaker. Even the JBL Moto Mod for the Moto Z line isn't all that great for its price and size. Now, though, you can get a highly-rated and highly portable Bluetooth speaker in the form of the UE ROLL 2 for just $49.99 on Amazon.
