Samsung accidentally outs unannounced 'Galaxy Watch' on its website

We've watched with moderate interest as the rumors swirl around Samsung's upcoming smartwatch release. Will it run Wear OS? Will it run Tizen? We still don't know, but we can now be fairly sure what the Galaxy Watch looks like. Samsung appears to have added a listing for the device on its website ahead of the announcement.

Samsung Galaxy Watch rumored to run Tizen after all, go on sale on August 24 (Updated)

What comes after 2016’s Samsung Gear S3 and last year’s not-exactly-a-sequel Gear Sport, both of which run the company’s Tizen OS? Why, the Galaxy Watch, of course, because names are fun. But if you were expecting someone else besides Armani, Hublot, Skagen and the rest of the traditional fashion brand horde to join Google in trying to save Wear OS, odds are you will have to wait a little while longer.

Facer introduces watch face games to help you kill time (and your smartwatch's battery life)

A day or two of uptime for a smartwatch is accepted as the norm these days — a sad state of affairs, indeed. So when a nifty feature is introduced, excitement is immediately doused with the reality that it almost certainly means conceding some already-scanty battery life. Facer recently announced watch face games for Wear OS and Tizen smartwatches, and they seem like a clever take on uber-casual gaming worth your while if you're fine keeping that charger nearby.

[Update: Maybe not] Samsung may be using Wear OS for its upcoming smartwatches instead of Tizen

Those of you who follow Samsung closely may have noticed that devices running Android or Android-based OSes (e.g. Galaxy S9, Galaxy J7, Galaxy Gear) all have the "Galaxy" in their name for the most part, whereas those that run Tizen/other software (e.g. Gear Fit, Gear S3, Z4) don't. You can imagine our confusion, then, when it was revealed that Samsung filed trademark applications for the names "Galaxy Watch" and "Galaxy Fit." But with famed leaker Evan Blass's latest tweet, it seems like Samsung may actually be releasing a pair of Wear OS smartwatches.

New trademarks suggest Samsung may move away from 'Gear' wearable branding

Samsung's wearables—fully wireless earbuds, watches, and fitness bands—have traditionally fallen under the "Gear" umbrella. A couple of new filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office suggest that could change, though: Samsung has applied for trademarks on the names Samsung Galaxy Watch and Samsung Galaxy Fit.

[Deal Alert] Get $30 off Samsung's Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro smartwatches

Samsung's latest wearables lineup has barely been on sale five minutes, but we're already seeing some good deals on them. The Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro, both of which were only launched last month, can be had for $30 off the MSRP at the moment, from various retailers.

The Gear Sport was just reviewed by Ryan, and he was pretty impressed with it. He thought the experience was as close as he's seen to a compelling smartwatch for average users, with the high price point of £300 being one of the only negatives he could find with it.

Samsung Upcycling program repurposes old Galaxy devices

In an effort to combat e-waste, Samsung and iFixit announced the "Galaxy Upcycling" initiative at the Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco. This initiative intends to allow users to develop ancillary uses for their old phones, and share the code on the Upcycling website, where other users can download and use these crowdsourced ideas. Among the ideas presented at the developer conference were Bitcoin mining clusters made from Galaxy S5 units, an arcade cabinet using a Galaxy tablet, and an IoT-connected fishtank. In addition to providing code downloads, the Upcycling website will also sell sensors and accessories for IoT-related projects.
