Google Pay in India (formerly Tez) quickly rose in popularity to become almost synonymous with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) — the very platform it’s based on. Last September, the company announced plans to expand beyond UPI payments to support tokenized cards, but nothing materialized even months after that initial teaser. It looks like Google Pay India is finally adding credit and debit cards as a supported payment option, though it isn't live for everyone yet.
New Google Pay app is rolling out dark mode with latest beta (APK Download)
Dark mode all the things!
In the last couple of months, Google Pay has undergone a tremendous amount of transformation, both in terms of its looks and function. Google merged the international Pay app with its Indian counterpart (formerly called Tez) following the latter’s Flutter rewrite and it even got a new logo quite recently. But unlike most other Google services, the new GPay has so far lacked a proper dark mode, but that's finally making its way to the beta version of the app.
Google has flipped the switch on its new Google Pay app and site slightly ahead of schedule. Though a formal release is still scheduled for just a bit later today, the Play Store listing for the new app has expanded to the US, and you can download it now.

Google’s Workplace rebranding came along with icon facelifts for a bunch of its core services, giving them a more uniform but horridly colorful icon set, and mildly sparing just a few. Our biggest gripe with the new-found consistency was that it made it harder to distinguish between the apps with a quick glance. It looks like our woes are going to aggravate further as the Indian version of Google Pay is getting a similar treatment, and this time it’s worse.
Google Pay app to soon be replaced with Flutter-based version
It'll be retired in favor of the app formerly known as Tez
India's Google Pay app recently received a makeover under the hood with Flutter, Google's cross-platform app framework. Looking at some screenshots posted by XDA's Mishaal Rahman on Twitter, it appears that Google will soon be deprecating the current Pay app that the rest of the world uses in favor of the now-Flutter-powered Google Pay India app.

The Indianized version of Google Pay has cornered the largest chunk of India’s UPI market, piggybacking the username-based P2P payment system. Launched as Tez, Google rebranded the app to Pay following the global consolidation of its payment solutions, though the app retained its distinct functionality that contrasts with its stateside counterpart. About two years into its existence, the app is now getting a design change under Google’s refreshed material guidelines, tidying up some of its UI elements.

Gather 'round folks, Tez celebration time! A new version of Duo is making the rounds with some interesting changes both on the surface and behind the scenes. There are some visual tweaks that bring a slightly updated look to Duo, and an option was removed from settings. Sadly, it looks like screen sharing may be dead for the foreseeable future. And if you're interested in scoring some rewards in trade for signing friends up to Duo, you'll have something to look forward to.

A couple of months back, Google introduced a brand new mobile payments app exclusive to India. The country's banking landscape is a little different to many of the territories that currently have access to Android Pay, and so it needed a different approach. Until now, Tez has only been able to pay participating merchants or transfer between users, but it will soon be possible to pay utility bills, too.
It's been a busy year for Samsung Pay, as the Korean company's mobile payments platform has been gradually rolled out around the globe to counter competing services from Google and Apple. It's particularly popular in India, where Samsung's MST technology is the most common at payment terminals. It launched there in March this year, and now it's gaining another handy feature: bill payments.
We all know Android Pay as Google's mobile payments app, but to date, it still only supports 14 countries. In India, however, the landscape is a little different, leading Google to develop Tez, an India-exclusive app that will allow users to make payments, split bills, and more.
Android Pay has become a popular method of digital payment since its launch in the US and Europe. It hasn't been launched in India, however, where the mobile payments landscape is a bit different. A government-endorsed platform called UPI (Universal Payments Interface) is widely used in India, with banks, e-commerce sites, and even tech companies like WhatsApp and Truecaller launching payment services based on it, hoping to grab a slice of the lucrative pie. Google is almost ready to enter this crowded space, with the launch rumored to be happening on Monday September 18th.
