Withings, previously Nokia (and even previously Withings), has updated its Health Mate app with some much-requested features. These include support for Dark Mode, sleep sync to Google Fit, and Strava integration.Read More
Strava is a popular fitness app for Android and iOS, and one of its main features is the ability to see other users' tracks and runs on a map (or share your own). In November of last year, Strava released a global heatmap, with the tracks of every run and bike ride visible as bands of light. There's only one problem - it revealed the location of several secret military facilities.Read More
The Strava Android app has been available on Android Wear for a while now, giving users access to activity stats on their wrists and letting them start and stop tracking without having to pull their phone out of their pocket. But that companion Wear app was still tethered to the phone in two ways. One, you had to have the Strava app on your phone to get it on your watch, and two, even if you could track activities through your watch without a phone nearby, you couldn't upload them directly to your account, you had to sync them to your phone first and then let the latter do the uploading.Read More
Last year at CES, New Balance announced that it would be releasing an Android Wear watch by the end of 2016. The company missed the schedule by a month or two, since the new watch has just been officially unveiled. It's called RunIQ and like the name and the brand behind it, it's focused on running.
The RunIQ packs the 3 features that were hinted at last year: GPS, an Intel processor, and integration with the Strava platform to add a social and competitive element to running. But now we have more specific details. The GPS chip is coupled with a built-in heart-rate sensor that can work for up to 5 hours with continuous monitoring and map tracking.Read More
Every single person I know who loves to bike to work or for fun uses Strava to track their route. I'm sure there are people who track their runs in Strava too, but I haven't met any of them. I don't know what it is about this app and cyclists specifically, but it seems that Strava has found a way to appeal to them and make the experience of cycling both challenging and social. Part of it are the Clubs, a feature that lets runners and cyclists form groups, compete with each other, share routes, manage events, discuss their progress, and more. There are over 130,000 active Strava Clubs and until today, the only way to access them was through the online site.Read More
Samsung's S Health app can connect to multiple apps and services to pull and push data through them. Notable examples are Nike's running app, Qardio for blood pressure monitoring, and more. But S Health has always lacked support and integration with plenty of known activity tracking services like Runkeeper, Strava, and Fitbit. This made the app a lot less useful as a central dashboard of your exercise, sleep, and various health metrics, and even diminished the appeal of Samsung's Gear watches since they couldn't share data to popular activity services.
But if you're running S Health 4.8.0 and above, you may have noticed a new hidden option that adds this very feature. Oddly, Samsung didn't publicize it anywhere, nor did it mention it in the app's changelog, and it even stuck it somewhere different from all the other integrated apps.Read More
