Google thinks it has solved the mystery of the cursed bootlooping wallpaper

Over the last week, a photo has been making the rounds at venues like Reddit and Twitter. It's an attractive mountain lake with the sun rising (or setting) through the dense clouds. Perfect for a phone's wallpaper, right? Not unless you like bootloops. Certain aspects of the image trigger an inescapable, repeating crash in Android's system UI, and most recent Android phones are likely susceptible, including Samsung phones and Google's Pixels. Thankfully, both Samsung and Google are aware of the issue and looking into a fix.

Weekend poll: Do you use a calibrated color profile on your phone?

One of the more vocal complaints leveled against Google's Pixel 2 phones was the display's default color calibration. Although some might prefer the over-saturated vibrance of less accurate color profiles, Google opted for a more calibrated default that was closer to sRGB as a means of providing color-accurate backward compatibility with apps that didn't immediately declare their color space.

Of course, Google later provided an update with a more saturated option for those that wanted it. But we're curious, how many of you actually use calibrated color profiles?

Google can be rather indecisive at times, which often leads to a cycle of adding and removing things from different versions of Android – usually after a user backlash of some sort. With the first developer preview of Android 8.1, Google removed the 'Picture color mode' sRGB toggle from original Pixels and Nexus phones. You'll be pleased to learn that order has now been restored.

[Update: Not all devices] Android 8.1 feature spotlight: The sRGB toggle has been removed entirely from Developer options

Calibrated color has been a hot topic recently for both Android and the Pixel 2 phones, and the Android 8.1 developer previews indicate more changes on the horizon. As of the current preview images, the "Picture color mode" sRGB toggle in Developer options has been removed. This change makes devices like the OG Pixels and last-generation Nexuses match the new Pixel 2 and 2XL, which similarly lack the setting since a calibrated mode is the default.
