Google Fi brings spam protection, VPN encryption, and Wi-Fi calling to more phones

Even after a major rebranding last year that made most Android devices compatible with Google Fi, users have to choose either a Google phone or a specially adapted one from the likes of Motorola to get the full Fi experience. That's because "designed for Fi" phones have unique modem and firmware tailored for the company's MVNO network to enable special features like automatic networking switching. Today's announcement from the Google Fi team, however, should make non-Google phone owners feel less left out, as the company is rolling out some hitherto Fi-only features to more Android devices, such as spam call warnings, Wi-Fi calling, and VPN protection.

[Update: Live now] Verizon to offer free spam and robocalling protection to all customers, starting in March

Following on the heels of T-Mobile's similar announcement last week, Verizon is set to roll out robocall and spam call protection to all of its customers starting in March. It will be available to all users who have "smartphones [that] support these features," including iPhones and Android devices.

T-Mobile rolls out Caller Verified spam call protection, starting with the Galaxy Note9

To say that spam calls are annoying would not only be redundant, but it'd also be a big understatement. These nuisances are primarily why I hardly answer my phone anymore and they've only gotten worse in recent months and years. T-Mobile is taking a stand against it by implementing what it calls Caller Verified technology, starting with the Samsung Galaxy Note9.
