Sega Forever games ironically disappear from the Play Store — not a first for Sega
It's double ironic as the Forever games replaced titles Sega removed in 2015
Few companies in the history of video games have had the rollercoaster ride that Sega has endured throughout the years. Thus, for every high in Sega’s history, there must come the inevitable low and with it, the loss of something good. Sega appears to be shutting down its Sega Forever mobile game service.
5 Sega game franchises we'd love to see on mobile now that Rovio is involved
What can we expect from Sega's acquisition of Rovio?
Sega's recent purchase of Rovio has opened the doors for a new wave of Sega games on mobile. This isn't just speculation either; Sega confirmed in the press release that the justification behind the purchase was to bring its existing IPs to mobile.
Sega's buying the Angry Birds developer Rovio for a huge chunk of change
Rovio will be a central part of Sega's mobile gaming strategy moving forward
Rovio has agreed to be bought by Sega's European branch for €706m / $775m. Expected to close in the second quarter of 2024, the deal marks a desire by Sega to invest in the mobile gaming market now that the Sega Forever initiative is in the past.
Football Manager 2023 Mobile lands on Android with UEFA licensing
Unfortunately, the Touch version is now an iOS and Switch exclusive
As the saying goes, there are only three constants in life, death, taxes, and football games. Today marks the continuation of this tradition, with Football Manager 2023 out now for mobile. Like last year's launch, there's no separate Touch version for Android, although it has returned to iOS and Nintendo Switch. As of today, you can purchase Football Manager 2023 Mobile for $9.99 from the Play Store.
Football Manager 2022 Mobile launches with a fresh set of mechanics to jump into matches faster
Though it looks like the Touch version is now a dedicated Nintendo Switch release
It's that time of year again. Sega has just launched its latest entry in its Football Manager simulation franchise, with Football Manager 2022 Mobile now available on the Google Play Store. Typically the Mobile version would launch with a separate streamlined Touch version on mobile, but it would appear that Football Manager 2022 Touch will only be available on the Nintendo Switch moving forward, which means the Touch version will no longer see a mobile release. Luckily Football Manager 2022 Mobile supports Chromebooks and Android tablets, alleviating any concerns that those with large screens would be left out. So if you've been eager to start your new season, as of this morning, you can grab Football Manager 2022 Mobile for $9.99 on both Android and iOS.
Football Manager 2021 Touch lands on Android as a streamlined version of the simulation game
As promised, the Touch edition is finally available
The Football Manager series sees yearly releases, and so it's that time of year again, which means Football Manager 2021 Mobile is now available on Android. Typically this annual release comes with a separate Touch version in tow for those that prefer to play on tablets, but it looks like the Touch version has been pushed back to December 1st. Still, if you don't require a tablet interface for your Football Manager needs, you can grab the standard version of Football Manager 2021 Mobile from the Play Store starting today.
SEGA's Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 races onto the Play Store
The Summer Olympics are postponed, so get your fix in Sega's new release
This past June, Sega announced Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020, a mobile game that appears to be similar in style to the Mario & Sonic series, and so it will offer 15 separate Olympic Games events and a plethora of playable Sonic characters. Until today, there hasn't been much mentioned about the upcoming title, but luckily Sega has just revealed that Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 will land on Android on May 7th and that it's officially available for pre-registration starting today.
SEGA is working on a Total War CCG, and it's already in closed beta on Android
Just what we need, yet another F2P collectible card game
Today SEGA has revealed Total War: ELYSIUM, an upcoming collectible card game for mobile and PC, and it's clearly themed around Creative Assembly's Total War strategy series. Today also marks the unveiling of a closed beta test for Android users, as well as the release of a trailer that provides a first look at gameplay footage. As you would expect, Total War: ELYSIUM will offer tactical card-based gameplay, where players will strive to build decks out of the game's many cards, all so that they can rule with an iron fist over the battlefield.
Cue black and white, low-quality footage, with a dramatic voice-over: "Do you ever get that itch to play a claw machine when there just isn't one around? Well, now you can!" And suddenly we see a bright, colorful world of happy kids in too-clean homes gleefully tapping away at their phones, clearly astounded at the prizes they're winning. Well, that's not exactly what you're going to get from the new US launch of "Sega Catcher Online," but you will get to essentially gamble except without winning money using a remotely-controlled, webcam-equipped claw machine, and I think it's pretty hilarious.
Last year I covered the releases of Sega's Football Manager Mobile and Touch management games, and it would appear that it's that time of year again since Football Manager 2020 Mobile and Football Manager 2020 Touch have been officially arrived on the Google Play Store. These yearly tandem releases offer similar yet separate gameplay mechanics. The Mobile title exists as a tweaked mobile version themed after the PC and console experience, and the Touch version is a slimmed-down affair that's a little more suitable for play on tablets and quick sessions. Both of these titles require an upfront payment, much like a premium release, though in-app purchases are still included.
League of Wonderland is a strategy game themed around fairy tales, historical figures, and popular myths to create an ensemble cast where players use hero cards to defeat their opponent's tower within a 2-minute timespan, much like Clash Royale. It will be up to you to lead your characters to victory to become the best player in the League of Wonderland.
For many people in the West, the Fist of the North Star anime film was their first introduction to Japanese animated cartoons, and so holds a special place in their heart. I recall being blown away by the movie in the early '90s, and luckily Sega has seen fit to bring its upcoming Fist of the North Star: Legends ReVIVE mobile action game to the West in its first English-language mobile debut, complete with new art designed under the watch of the original manga illustrator Tetsuo Hara.
Back in 2013 Sega released its mobile version of After Burner Climax on the Play Store as a premium game priced at three dollars. In 2015 it was removed from the Play Store along with a bunch of other premium titles from Sega. Slowly these games have been returning to Android under new free-to-play listings as part of the SEGA Forever program, and After Burner Climax is the latest title to make a return.
Sega has officially launched its mobile real-time strategy game Revolve8 on the Play Store. It's free-to-play and exudes a flashy anime theme for its stylized fairy tale characters. The gameplay revolves around 3-minute online PvP matches where players pull from a deck of eight cards to send out heroes to destroy their opponent's towers, much like Clash Royale.
Back in August of 2017 Sega released a SEGA Forever title called Golden Axe Classic on Android. Today that Play Store release has been updated to include Golden Axe II and III and an "s" has been added to the end of the title so that it's now appropriately called Golden Axe Classics. A small distinction, but also a significant addition to the app that I'm sure any fan of the Golden Axe series will be excited to see.
Sega's Football Manager 2019 Mobile and Football Manager 2019 Touch have both landed on the Google Play Store. These management sims bring along plenty of new enhancements, but of course, you can still expect to find everyone's favorite soccer management simulation gameplay.
Alright, it's been a while since the last SEGA Forever release, but today we a have a new title that contains a three-pack from the Shining Force RPG series. One thing to keep in mind is that this is a series that has gone through a few changes over the years. The first title, Shining in the Darkness, is a first-person dungeon crawler with turn-based battles. The thing is, Shining Force and Shining Force II play more like a tactical RPG. So as you can see, this collection contains a solid selection that should cover just about anyone's interests.
The SEGA Forever program may have had it's release schedule slowed down earlier this year, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few classics left in Sega's library that are slated to come to Android. Last month we received a re-release of Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode II, and today the classic beat 'em up Streets of Rage 2 is on the menu. This is the first time an official release of Streets of Rage 2 has landed on our digital shelves, and you can play it for free right now as long as you don't mind a bunch of annoying advertisements.
Ah, good 'ol Sega, re-releasing what used to be paid titles as new ad-filled releases that contain the exact same game. The SEGA Forever program is rife with similar re-releases, so it's no surprise to see that Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode II is the next to join the bunch. If you own the old version that is now delisted, you will still have access to the download, but updates are now out of the question, which means it's only a matter of time before an Android OS update breaks your old copy. Luckily Sega provides a way to remove the ads in this new listing, but I doubt those of you who just had a death sentence handed down to your old purchase are going to freely give Sega more money.
Last month, the English version of Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2 was listed on the Play Store for pre-registration. At the time, I assumed the official release would follow shortly, so it's not much of a surprise to see that it's available for download today. Fans of the Shin Megami Tensei series will be able to jump into an all-new story in the long-running post-apocalyptic adventure. So get ready to explore 3D dungeons as you collect a massive amount of demons in this new gacha JRPG from Sega.
