The Samsung Galaxy S III compared to the Galaxy S24 Ultra
Frogs in boiling water: How smartphones got so huge

It’s our own fault there are no more small phones

At 142mm tall, 70mm wide, and 8mm thick, 2011's Samsung Galaxy Note was smaller than today's Galaxy S24, now widely considered one of the best small phones. The first Note received generally positive reviews — as well as criticism for being "positively gargantuan."

I wouldn't say my hands are alarmingly small, but you won't find me playing piano at Carnegie Hall, and I've never managed complex guitar chords. And you'll never catch me using any near-7-inch high-end phablets like the Galaxy S24 Ultra. My thumb simply cannot reach the notification bar without dislocating.

I mean, it still doesn't sound SMALL-small, but baby steps, right?

Is someone really listening up there? Have our incessant pleas for the return of sensible phone sizes finally been heard? Some recent rumors sure have us wondering as much. And we're not talking about the return of some explicitly petite series like Sony's Xperia Compact line, either — there's increasing evidence of a trend towards the smaller for one of Android's most prominent flagship families.

Weekend Poll: What screen size do you consider 'small' for a phone?

Somewhere around 6" seems to be our new cutoff for "bezel-less" designs — what's yours?

This is a holiday weekend. For many, it's the first big chance we've had to see friends or family in the last year and a half. So let's keep today's question simple, brief, and not too deep: What do you consider to be a "small" phone?

As a keen and professional observer of the modern consumer electronics market, I can say without fear of contradiction that smartphone screens are getting bigger. So can columnist Alex Barredo, but he's done an impressive amount a statistical legwork and presentation to prove it. On the surface his analysis of smartphone size screen trends may seem obvious, but within you can find dramatic shifts in patterns of both the overall market and specific companies. It's worth a read if you're interested in trends and device design.

Asus really went big with announcements at Computex this year, naming 11 new products in about 30 minutes. One of the really interesting devices to make the cut was the Fonepad Note FHD 6, a smaller cousin to the 7-inch model announced earlier this year at MWC. In many ways, the super-sized phone blends qualities from other popular devices like the HTC One's front-facing speakers and a smart stylus from the Galaxy Note. While this obviously isn't the first phone to include a stylus, it's certainly new to this OEM's portfolio. The new handset will also remain faithful to Intel, but jumps to the brand new Z2560 processor.

Clarification: Yes, it is 5 million sold to end consumers, officially confirmed by Samsung to Phone Scoop.

In one of the the more recent weekend polls, we asked what is your ideal tablet screen size? - most users went for 9.51" - 10.5", which ended up taking about 50% of the overall votes. This is not much of a surprise since 10.1-inch is the most common size of Android tablet.
