Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 vs. Galaxy Z Flip 3: Should you upgrade?

Samsung’s new foldable offers select improvements over its predecessor

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has been released, but if you want to save a few dollars, it’s a good time to look at Samsung’s previous foldables. Despite being the last generation, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Flip 3 still have much to offer — gorgeous displays, great performance, and impressive build quality. While the Flip 3 is still good if found for a discount, the Flip 4 features some key improvements that make it the better choice.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: Is the Flip 5 worth the upgrade?

The differences between the Flip 5 and Flip 3 are more than skin deep

If you own a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, you might have an itch to upgrade after seeing one of the tempting Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers. For the first time on the Flip series, the external display is large enough for scrolling social media and responding to text messages. Samsung also redesigned the hinge, so the device now closes flat. In addition, the Flip 5 features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, bringing performance in line with Samsung’s other flagship devices. While all those things sound tempting, does it make for a worthy upgrade from the Flip 3?

The great thing about the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is that if you pick one up today, you'll still be getting one of Samsung's best mobile phones with a foldable display. You'll just be getting one at a lower price. And, for the next three hours, you can grab one for an even lower price, direct from Samsung.

If you're still hanging on to the first 5G version of the Z Flip, it's time to turn it in

Three years after its first mainstream folding smartphone dominated headlines, Samsung's knack for making some of the best Android phones continues to lead the foldable charge. Substantially redefining the meaning of the term "flip phone," the horizontally folding Galaxy Z Flip offers the functionality of a high-end smartphone in a conveniently small package with a highly functional outer display.

Samsung significantly nerfs its Z Flip 3 trade-in deal for the Z Flip 4

Trading in your Z Flip 3 will now get you $200 less towards your new Samsung foldable

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 was an instant hit that amassed over 52% of the total foldable phone market share in 2021. The device's successor — the Galaxy Z Flip 4 — was released last week. To enable similar success for its new foldable, Samsung has been offering $900 of credit towards the purchase of the Z Flip 4 in exchange for a functioning model of its predecessor. This ensured that the cost of the Z Flip 4 after credit deductions came to a mere $99. However, it seems that the deal has now been modified, leaving those who bought the base model Z Flip 3 hundreds of dollars worse off.

Samsung's compact Galaxy Z Flip3 is a blazing hot $700 for Amazon Prime Day

The class-leading flip phone is currently $300 off

The Galaxy Z Flip3 is one of the best phones Samsung makes, thanks to its unique ability to fold down to half its size, making it easier to fit into pockets. It's become the go-to for people who want to try out foldables without going all the way with a Fold3, and now it's joining the myriad of other phones on sale for Amazon Prime Day, hitting the incredible price of $700.

It's down to the price of a regular ol' non-folding phone

Folding phones are extremely cool, but with four-figure MSRPs, they're hardly mainstream yet. At a normal price of $1,000, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 is already relatively inexpensive for a device that can bend in half, but ahead of Prime Day, Amazon has discounted it to $700 — a $300 discount that makes the phone a more realistic option for regular people.

AT&T is offering $800 off the Pixel 6 Pro and Samsung flagships with even decade-old trade-ins

Qualifying unlimited customers can save big by trading phones as old as the original Samsung Galaxy S

Carrier deals typically come with a lot of strings attached. They're often limited to a certain subset of customers (or worse, new subscribers only), and discounts generally come in the form of bill credits rather than immediate cash savings. Sometimes, though, they're too juicy not to share. That's the case this time: AT&T customers on qualifying unlimited plans can trade in nearly any old Samsung phone to get a whopping $800 off a number of Android flagships, including phones like the Galaxy S22+ and the Pixel 6 Pro.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 gain eSIM support in the US, plus night portrait and telephoto pro modes

Unlocked and T-Mobile device owners can even dual-wield networks with eSIM

By

Slowly but steadily, eSIM adoption has picked up among Android manufacturers. Samsung has been leading the pack by offering the requisite eSIM hardware on all its flagship devices launched in recent years. For some strange reason though, except for the Galaxy S22 series, the eSIM functionality is disabled on all its flagship phones sold in the US and is only enabled via a software update in the future. The Galaxy Note20 series, for example, launched in 2020 with eSIM support, but the functionality was only turned on in the US eight months later. Now, something similar is happening with Samsung's 2021 flagship foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3.

Samsung is gearing up to announce its 2022 foldables — the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Fold4 — in a couple months from now. However, that does not mean its current-gen lineup is any bad, with the Flip3 and Fold3 both being among the best Android phones on the market. If you have been looking to jump on the foldable bandwagon, but their steep prices have been holding you back, you should not miss out on what's been going on with the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 on Amazon. The deal drops both devices to some of the lowest prices we have tracked so far.

A new Pokémon tie-in version of one of Samsung’s best foldable phones is official, and it seems to be the ultimate package for anyone who wants to theme their next phone around the iconic franchise. This new version of the Galaxy Z Flip3 is titled the Pokémon Edition. It comes with a swathe of accessories to make you feel like the ultimate Pokémon trainer.

Z Fold3 bump (2)
Samsung drops the 'Z' branding from foldables, since Russia ruined it

A 'Z' by any other name bends just as well

Samsung loves some good alphabet branding, and after the release of the inaugural Galaxy Fold in 2019, the company consolidated its foldable lineup under a new series: Starting with the first Z Flip, Galaxy Z became its umbrella for every phone that folds, just like Galaxy S designates flagships, and Galaxy A signals the presence of budget/mid-range devices. Here in 2022, though, the letter Z has taken on a bit of an ignoble new meaning. Samsung now seems to be backing away from its Z foldable branding — very probably due to its association with Russia's recent military aggression.

Samsung phone used as prop tricorder on Star Trek: Picard

A longstanding urban legend had it that the invention of the cell phone was inspired by communicators seen on Star Trek, the original series that premiered in 1966. That proved untrue, which is too bad — real 21st century mobile devices showing up as props in a Trek spinoff in 2022 would've felt like coming full circle. And indeed, that's just what we're getting now, as Star Trek: Picard uses another Samsung foldable smartphone as a futuristic prop — for the second week in a row.

CoverScreen OS for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 adds nifty tricks and cool visuals in latest update

The external display on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 is pretty small and only suitable for accessing notifications and a few Quick Settings toggles by default. However, the developer behind CoverScreen OS completely reimagined the small screen's capabilities. They introduced options to launch an entire app drawer, open apps, and take direct actions on notifications without needing to flip open your phone. Thanks to a new update, CoverScreen OS is now getting a few more tricks.

Samsung's January 2022 security update is arriving for more phones internationally

Now available for the Galaxy A51 5G and several other A series phones

Samsung used to be one of the worst companies when it comes to updates. Back in the TouchWiz days, software support for Samsung phones was absolutely abysmal. But the arrival of One UI saw a change of direction for the company, currently promising up to 3 years of major updates and 5 years of security patches — and actually doing a decent-ish job at rolling them out in a timely manner. Now Samsung's saying "happy New Year" a little early as the first January 2022 security patches for its phones (and specifically, for the Galaxy A51) start becoming available.

Samsung's January 2022 security update is arriving for more phones in the US

Now available for the T-Mobile Galaxy Note10 and Verizon Tab S7+

Samsung's been doing its part to earn a reputation for delivering regular, reliable updates for all its phones, flagship and budget alike. That continues today as the unlocked Galaxy S21 series receives the January 2022 security patch, only a few days after international models.

It's not quite December yet, but that hasn't stopped Samsung from starting to update the first of its devices with the new December 2021 security patch. Kicking things off this week are the Galaxy Z Flip3 and Fold3 running their latest One UI 4 beta.

The Galaxy Z Flip3 is, depending on who you ask, Samsung's best attempt at a foldable phone so far. It's the company's most affordable one to date and still manages to deliver flagship performance. But it lacks at least one key thing compared to its more expensive cousin, the Z Fold3 — an external usable display. The Z Flip3 has a cover screen, but it's too small to use as your main one. Or is it? One developer took it as a challenge and has made the cover screen fully usable as your main display.

Samsung received widespread praise for its approach to updates from late last year up until this moment. It rolled out Android 12 to its entire flagship lineup within just three months after the official release, beating the likes of OnePlus to the punch and besting its previous track record. That said, we know that Samsung rolls out its updates in stages, with certain regions getting it earlier and others having to wait for some time. That has been true for all of Samsung’s updated flagships, and the Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3 are no exception, with US users (specifically those using non-Verizon units) having to wait for the update all this while. Now though, they will join in on the fun and get a taste of Android 12.

Galaxy Z Flip3 Olympics Games Edition-2

Ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics early next month, Samsung has announced the Galaxy Z Flip3 Olympic Commemorative Edition to celebrate the event. The phone will be available in a new Winter Dream White color with gold accents on the frame and hinge. It also features Samsung and Beijing Olympics logos on the back panel. The area surrounding the 1.9-inch secondary display and dual-cameras is finished in black to give the device a contrasting look.
