This ancient Samsung smartwatch just got new watch faces

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2, released in 2019, is in for a treat this year

By

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is ancient by tech standards, having been released in 2019 with Tizen, an operating system that Samsung has long left behind in favor of Google's Wear OS. In contrast to Google, Samsung isn’t one to quickly abandon old products just because they aren’t the hot new thing in town anymore. While the Watch Active 2 hasn’t received an update to Wear OS, it still keeps getting new features. This time around, the Watch Active 2 is getting two watch faces straight from One UI 5.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, Watch 5, and Watch 4 are some of the best Android smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch lineup features excellent health-tracking capabilities, a sleek design, and smooth performance. The cherry on top is Emergency SOS, which comes in handy if something goes wrong and you don't have your phone with you. Before you use the watch's built-in emergency service, you must set it up. Here's how to set up Emergency SOS on your Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, Watch 5, or Watch 4.

Wear OS isn't perfect, but it's getting better

Wear OS 4 is finally here, released to all compatible Android watches, including the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and the Google Pixel Watch. It's a nice upgrade, with improvements to get longer battery life, the possibility of more watch face types, and better compatibility with your phone.

One UI Watch 5 quietly adds support for Google's new Watch Unlock feature

No more fiddling around to unlock your phone

It’s always a pain to have to unlock your phone when your hands are full, so Google started working on a new Watch Unlock feature earlier this year to simplify things. From what we had seen in early demos, it automatically unlocks your phone when your unlocked Google Pixel Watch is brought near. In August, we reported that the security setting could also be coming to Samsung Galaxy Watches. While it's yet to make its way to Google's own Pixel Watch, Samsung has already added code into its latest watch OS update, indicating that the feature may work on your Galaxy Watch and phone, too.

Samsung's next Galaxy Watch may bring back a beloved feature

The rotating bezel could make a comeback with the Galaxy Watch 6 Pro

Samsung Galaxy Watch fans were bummed to learn that both the Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro lacked a physical rotating bezel. The feature has long been a staple of Samsung’s top-end Android smartwatches, such as the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, allowing you to scroll through content without touching the screen. More importantly, it set the watch's design apart from the competition, but Samsung chose to ditch the rotating bezel last year in favor of a haptic version. If a new rumor is to be believed, the South Korean tech giant could restore the beloved feature with its next top-tier smartwatch.

Samsung's next Galaxy Watch may deliver the battery gains you've been waiting for

A new leak reveals the battery capacities of the Galaxy Watch 6 series

Battery life continues to be a sore point for even the best Android smartwatches, and not even Samsung is immune. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is a classic example there, and that 2021 model could barely last more than a day between charges. If you forgot to charge it in the evening, you'd be out of luck until you found a power outlet (and better hope you brought along its magnetic adapter). Even the current-gen Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro failed to make meaningful improvements. But now, the next generation of Samsung smartwatches may finally address those shortcomings with larger battery capacities.

If you've been debating buying yourself a wonderful smartwatch, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is not only the best Android smartwatch you can buy today from a hardware perspective but also the most reliable from a software standpoint. One of the few watches with Wear OS 3.5 — at least until next month's Pixel Watch — Samsung regularly updates the Watch 4 and now the Watch 5 to add new features, fix bugs, and optimize the One UI Watch. And right now, Woot is taking $30 off all Bluetooth models of the Watch 5.

Samsung-funded study shows just how well the Galaxy Watch4’s blood oxygen sensor works

The wearable demonstrates efficacy at diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea

By

Smartwatches have really been coming into their own over the past few years, shedding their glorified pedometer-with-apps image and evolving into feature-rich health trackers. Everybody wants to deliver actionable health data whether that means detecting atrial fibrillation or monitoring blood oxygen content. Samsung packs a lot of sensors into its Galaxy Watch4 and recently published the results of a study demonstrating the smartwatch's efficacy at detecting symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Samsung's wearable offerings are probably the best alternatives to the Apple Watch. Its partnership with Google for the Wear OS-based Galaxy Watch4 series seems to have done wonders for everyone involved, as the company achieved its highest quarterly smartwatch shipments last year. However, battery life is one of its Achilles' Heel as it is not big enough to last a couple of days nor does it charge quickly. A leak from a couple of weeks ago hinted that the 40mm Galaxy Watch5 could sport a bigger battery to fix this issue. Another leak today confirms that the 44mm variant of the watch will also ship with a bigger battery.

New health features and 10 new watch faces

Samsung may have launched the Wear OS 3-running Galaxy Watch4 earlier this year, but it is not forgetting its previous Tizen-based Galaxy Watches. Alongside the One UI 4 and Android 12 update for the Galaxy S21 series, the company has announced a significant new update for its non-Wear OS Galaxy Watch models: the Galaxy Watch, Watch Active, Active2, and Watch3. These smartwatches will gain new watch faces, health monitoring features, and advanced fall detection capabilities. Samsung first introduced some of these features on the Galaxy Watch4 last month.

One of the cheapest ways to try out Tizen

Samsung knows what it's doing when it comes to wearables. The company's Tizen operating system is routinely hailed as being in a league above other competitors like Google's Wear OS due to its speed and fluidity. Amazon is currently offering the original Galaxy Watch for prices as low as $134.97 — the same watch that Samsung will pay $200 for in trade-in value. The Galaxy Watch operates how you'd expect a smartwatch to work, giving quick access to notifications, music controls, and health tracking features. The watch charges wirelessly and lasts for days on a single charge, even beating out chunkier Wear OS alternatives. Though it works well with Samsung phones, it's also compatible with other Android devices as well as phones running iOS.

Five apps you should try on your Samsung Galaxy Watch

There aren't many third-party apps, but we found a few good ones

4
By

Samsung's Galaxy Watches usually pair excellent hardware with refined software, but there still aren't that many third-party applications. Samsung has covered most of the basics with its own apps, and you likely won't do most of the same tasks with your watch as you would with your smartphone, but it can still be difficult to find apps to improve your watch's usability. It doesn't help that the Galaxy Store lumps in watch faces with applications, so scrolling through the top apps mostly amounts to scrolling through various clock styles. There are some hidden gems on Samsung's watches, so we decided to highlight some of the best third-party applications we could find. This list doesn't include watch faces (or apps to manage them, sorry Facer), nor are we including any of Samsung's own apps (since most of them are pre-installed).

The Samsung Galaxy Watch3 has been leaked almost completely at this point. There's some we still don't know — how much it'll cost, for example — but we're fairly sure it's going to be revealed on August 5th at Samsung Unpacked, we've got most of the specs at this point, and even a look at a live Watch 3 with a band getting unboxed and set up in a hands-on video. If Samsung has any big Watch 3 secrets left, they're well hidden, but here's everything we know so far.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 will likely debut on July 22

Time is ticking down to the announcement date

By

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Watch 3 has been leaking like crazy recently. It first went through the FCC back in May, and then a report claimed that Samsung would announce the watch at an event in July. And now it looks like we're getting some even more specific confirmation of that announcement date thanks to a leaked product render.

Samsung's Tizen smartwatches are stiff competition for Wear OS on the Android side of wearables, and now it looks like the latest model is nearly ready to arrive. A couple weeks back we saw a presumptive Galaxy Watch 3 strut its stuff at the FCC, and more recently rumors talked about a possible public unveiling sometime in July, but we still didn't have a ton to go on. Now our expectations are starting to really take shape, as possible specs for the upcoming Galaxy Watch 3 have been released, and they look like solid upgrades over the previous generation.

With fitness-tracking in a timeless design

When we first reviewed the Samsung Galaxy Watch, we were impressed with its fantastic build quality and battery life, but couldn't justify the steep price tag. If you've been eyeing one for yourself, the refurbished 42mm Rose Gold model is currently on sale for $140 ($120 off) on eBay and Amazon, the lowest we've seen yet.The Samsung Galaxy Watch is powered by an Exynos 9110 chipset, running on Samsung's Tizen OS. It's an OS that's admired by many, and Google's consistent issues with WearOS have only helped that number. The watch works best when paired to a Samsung device, but retains most functionality even with other phones. Some notable features include built-in GPS, Samsung Pay via NFC, and a 5 ATM rating for water resistance. Supporting all of that is a 270mAh battery that can go a few days between charges.

Samsung's best smartwatches are cheaper than ever

Samsung makes some of the best Android-compatible smartwatches around. Last year the company released the Watch Active, a smaller sports-focused watch, and followed it up a few months later with the Active2. Both watches are still excellent, and now they're heavily discounted at multiple retailers.

Samsung Galaxy Watches will soon be able to read your blood pressure

Exclusive to the Galaxy Watch Active2 in Korea at first, and will require a calibration cuff

By

Samsung has been working on adding blood pressure measurements to its wearables for a while. It launched a limited test of that feature for the original Watch Active back in 2019, and now, about a year later, the company has announced that the South Korean government has authorized its brand-new Health Monitor app. It's capable of taking blood pressure with nothing but the Watch Active2 (plus some calibration help from a traditional cuff) and will be available in the country in the third quarter of 2020.
