Although plenty of CES announcements cover gadgets that you'll be able to buy in the near future, it's also a chance to get a glimpse at what could be coming down the pike years from now. And personally, if we're talking prototypes, there's no company more exciting than Samsung Display. These sorts of early experiments are how the entire foldable category got its start, after all, and checking out whatever the company has in the works can give us a glimpse of what future Galaxy smartphones might look like.

It's no challenge these days to find a 4K TV that delivers great picture quality. Just about all of them look incredible, with HDR and display technology reaching a point where it can be difficult telling them apart. Some may have a slightly clearer picture or a wider range of colors, but for the most part once you get to higher priced models, the differences can be hard to discern. That's why, when shopping for a new TV, concerns like design start becoming more and more important, helping them really stand out.

Samsung phones have always been known for their spectacular displays. In fact, one of the reasons the S23 Ultra landed on our best Android phones list was because its screen was the head of its class. As other companies inch closer to the visual quality of Samsung's displays, the South Korean company is looking to widen the gap again. This time, it's working on a new OLED panel that will be able to read fingerprints from anywhere on the screen.

Every year at CES, we get to see some of the most outlandish tech companies can create working prototypes for. It’s like a peek into the future of the consumer electronics industry. Leading the charge on the display front, Samsung Display is usually a centerpiece of attraction at the conference. CES 2023 is no different with the company showcasing what the upcoming implementations of deformable OLED panels could look like.

Samsung’s foldable smartphone designs have evolved significantly since the first generation Galaxy Fold — and that whole mess with peeling off the protective screen layer from early units. Advancements in material science for displays are partly to thank for the abuse foldables can withstand now. While the company's current models use Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), that may not be up to scratch (literally) for tablet-sized screens, and Samsung Display is reportedly now considering a switch to a different material for the top layer of extra-large-screen foldables.

Samsung Display supplies screens for all kinds of devices, ranging from OLED smartphones to large QLED TVs. Now with growing interests in all things metaverse, the wearable headset industry finds itself in immediate need of high-grade extremely compact displays. Samsung Display sounds like it may be putting itself in a position to rise to that challenge, and new supply chain reports suggest Apple and Samsung have sought micro-OLED panels from the company.

Foldable screens transitioned from being a pipe dream to an actual product in 2019 with the launch of Samsung's original Galaxy Fold. In 2020, the company unveiled an all-new form factor with the Galaxy Z Flip, and successive models have proved it's not just a fleeting gimmick. While the Flip and Fold series currently headline Samsung's foldable efforts — and some of the best phones around — that doesn't necessarily mean its Display division hasn't been looking at more form factors. With the return of Display Week's live exhibitions this year, it's the perfect time to show off some of those futuristic concepts.

Samsung's first-gen folding phone was rough around the edges, but with each new device comes plenty of refinement, proving the tech is here to stay. It's no secret that the company is working on follow-ups to last year's Galaxy Z lineup, and we might be looking at a preview of what's to come. As part of Display Week 2021, Samsung Display unveiled some new OLED panels today that could hint at the future of smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is the first folding phone with a glass display — an impressive feat, though so far, it hasn't exactly proven to be very durable. The company still believes in its product and has decided to commercialize and scale up production of the Z Flip's display cover (not the OLED panel itself, but the layer on top of it). The ultra-thin glass (UTG) will be available for purchase for other manufacturers building foldable devices.
