Though some units shipped early, formal availability for Samsung's new Galaxy S21 series starts today. That means "pre-order" is now "buy" at most retailers, and many of the early pre-order credit promotions are gone. However, trade-in values at Samsung's store remain pretty great, and you can still get $50-100 (or more) in store credit, plus a SmartTag.
Samsung's various models for the S21 aren't all the same. If the price and physical size didn't clue you in, the spec sheets likely did. And nestled among the list of different named standards and numbers is a curious tidbit that escaped detection on launch day: While the lower-end Galaxy S21 and S21+ support 960 fps super slow motion video (in bursts up to 0.5s), the ostensibly more premium S21 Ultra, with its upgraded cameras, doesn't — or least, it doesn't natively.
It turns out that Samsung is pre-loading the Galaxy S21 with Google Messages in most markets, as Engadget learned from an interview with Google's Hiroshi Lockheimer yesterday. By doing so, Samsung joins other OEMs like OnePlus, LG, and Motorola in using Google's messaging app by default. Unfortunately, we in the US are stuck with the regular Samsung Messages.
After all the usual leaks and rumors leading up to today's livestreamed Unpacked event, Samsung finally officially took the wraps off its Galaxy S21 lineup. There were few surprises left for TM Koh and co to reveal as the three phones were introduced alongside the Korean company's latest attempt at true wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds Pro.
Pretty much everything about the Galaxy S21 series has been leaked at this point short of a full announcement... and now, a full press release has been leaked. Samsung Germany accidentally posted the Galaxy S21 Ultra's announcement earlier today; it's since been deleted, but as we all know, truly erasing something from the Internet is next to impossible.
