Stitcher Radio Podcast Manager Updated With Variable Speed Playback (But Only For Marshmallow) And Bug Fixes

If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you probably spend at least ten hours or more every week getting through them. A common feature of podcast playback tools is the option to speed up playback, allowing at least some users to get through these almost entirely spoken-word programs more quickly. Popular Android podcast manager Stitcher now includes this option... but oddly, only for devices running Android 6.0 or later. The tool can speed up playback to 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x (which is insanely fast). It can also slow playback by half.

Other changes in this version (3.5.5 on my Nexus 6) are mostly bug fixes, notably including a major bug for Wi-Fi detection on Marshmallow phones and tablets.

BeyondPod Releases Separate Betas That Include Support For Android M And Android Auto

Collectively, the userbases for Android M and Android Auto have to represent only a tiny fraction of the total users of Android. But those people are also the most dedicated Android fans, so any developer hoping to get attention from power users would do well to consider them. Case in point: BeyondPod, the go-to podcast manager. This weekend the developers posted new betas with support for Android M and Android Auto on their official forums.

Notice the plural there: you can't get support for both M and Auto in the same app, at least not yet. The 4.1 branch currently supports Android Auto head units, and the 4.2 branch supports the versions of the Android M Developer Preview that have been released so far.

BeyondPod Adds Android Auto Support And A Few Minor Changes In The Latest Beta

Android Auto is finally here! Sort of. It's available in exactly one (incredibly expensive) car stereo at the moment, meaning that there are probably more active users of the Nexus Q right now. But that isn't stopping some responsible developers from adding the support for the new hardware into their apps, and today popular podcast manager BeyondPod joins them. The latest beta version, available as a direct download or via the Play Store beta system, works with Google's automotive electronics push.

I'd love to show you a photo of BeyondPod working with Android Auto, but of course I don't have one of those Pioneer head units or a compatible car.

Those of you who've ben lamenting the GoodNews reader, especially its tight integration with podcasts, now have a new alternative to consider. First of all, uPod doesn't tie into Feedly's copycat reader API - apparently some developers aren't wholly ready to hitch their wagons to another system that relies on the goodwill of a potential competitor.

BeyondPod Podcast Player Beta Adds Feedly Support Before Google Reader Bites The Dust

Four days. Four days, fellow Google Reader pilgrims: that's how long you've got until Google turns its back on the RSS service forever. Apps that used to rely on Google Reader as a backend have switched to alternatives, usually Feedly's new and almost identical backend API. Popular podcast manager/player BeyondPod is the latest to do so, but in order to try it out, you'll have to leave the comforting confines of the Google Play Store for the treacherous waters of a non-Market Beta.

You can download the latest BeyondPod beta (version 3.1.31) for smartphones here. The tablet version is a separate app, and the beta (with Feedly syncing) is downloadable here.

[Try This] AntennaPod Is A Free, Holo-Themed, Open Source Podcatcher

When it comes to podcatchers on Android, there aren't a whole lot of good, free options. The current top dogs - BeyondPod, Doggcatcher, and the like - can cost upwards of five dollars, which is a bit of stretch for anyone who only casually listens to one or two key podcasts (like the AP podcast for example). That's really what makes AntennaPod so special - it has a very nice, Holo-theme layout, offers many of the features that users really want in a podcatcher, is completely ad-free, and is open source. That's a pretty impressive list right out of the gate.
