Sony shuttering PlayStation Vue in early 2020, leaving us with one less streaming option

After chugging along for four years, Sony is calling it quits and ending its Playstation Vue subscription service. The company cites the slow-changing and competitive Pay TV industry as its primary reason for the pullout, and it plans to focus on its core gaming business going forward. Subscribers will have access to the service until January 30, 2020.

PlayStation Vue Mobile 2.0 gets a program guide, sub-profile creation, and more

PlayStation Vue is a TV streaming service that provides live shows, sports, and On Demand to subscribers. Despite the name, it is not limited to Sony's gaming consoles. There is an Android TV app for sitting back on your couch to watch your favorite shows, as well as a mobile version for on-the-go content consumption on your phone or tablet.

PlayStation Vue expands to Android TV today, PC and Mac web support coming soon

Sony just announced today that its PlayStation Vue streaming service is coming to Android TV. If you do not know what Vue is, it might just seem like another streaming option. It is actually more akin to Dish's Sling TV with live TV channels, sports networks, and HBO and Showtime across a variety of price tiers. Additionally, the "PlayStation" moniker might give the impression of requiring Sony's PlayStation 4 game console — it actually doesn't. For all of the cord cutters out there, this is just another good option in a growing market.

Sony's PlayStation Vue Android app is out now

As Sony promised it would last week, it has released the PlayStation Vue app for Android today, featuring real-live cast support. The app is available on the Play Store now, or via APK Mirror right here. To use Vue, you'll have to be an existing Vue subscriber - the Android app doesn't have any kind of sign-up flow, so if you want to start a Vue trial, you'll need to do that through your PlayStation 3 or 4 console, or through the PS Vue webpage. You do not technically need a PlayStation to use Vue, and Sony offers a free 7-day trial, but you will need a supported Vue TV device (Amazon Fire TV and Roku, for example) to set up your initial profile - the Vue Mobile app does not support this feature.

Sony Announces Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick Support For Its PlayStation Vue TV Service, Chromecast Support Coming Soon

If you don't know what PlayStation Vue is, don't worry, you're not alone. It's not a gaming service of any kind, it's an IPTV subscription that delivers select shows and networks to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. It's a sort of hardware-exclusive take on SlingTV. Or at least it was, until Sony announced that the service was expanding to other streaming devices. Amazon's Fire TV and Fire TV Stick will be the first non-Sony hardware compatible with PlayStation Vue, not counting iPhone and iPad.

Apparently there are still no plans for core Android app, but the service will expand to the Chromecast (and presumably Android TV by way of its built-in Cast support) at some point in the future.
