Android Auto reaches 50 million installs on the Play Store

While other apps recently celebrated download numbers surpassing billions, Android Auto only reached the milestone of 50 million installs on the Play Store yesterday. That's still an impressive number for an app that only works with a limited amount of car entertainment systems and that doesn't come pre-installed on most Android phones, unlike the 'big' Google apps such as Gmail, Search, or Calendar.

Skype reaches 1 billion downloads on the Play Store

The 1 billion download club on the Play Store is a pretty exclusive ones, with most apps belonging to Google's or Facebook's (including WhatsApp) conglomerate. Now Skype is joining this elite club and getting the coveted 1 billion round bubble on its Play Store listing.

There was a time when video calling someone was synonymous with Skyping: very few other competing services existed and even then, they weren't as attractive since everyone was on Skype. But with Facetime, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger's video calls, Hangouts, and the more recent Duo, Skype feels like the old exec who's trying to stay relevant by throwing "cloud" and "mobile-first" at every board meeting.

Google Street View goes round and round, reaches 1 billion installs on the Play Store

I still remember when Google Street View was that pre-installed icon that I wished I could remove from my device but couldn't because it came as part of Google Maps. Now the exploration service is all grown up, living independently, and thanks to the spread of 360 cams and user-generated content as well as the addition of dozens of interesting photosphere collections from real to fictional, has reached 1 billion total installs on the Play Store.

While many of those downloads will have resulted from the app being pre-installed on devices for the longest time, 1 billion is still an impressive milestone to reach.

Google Duo reaches 50 million downloads on the Play Store

Of the two communication apps that Google announced last year at I/O, it's not a surprise that Duo found a larger appeal and better reception than Allo. It wasn't battling against existing juggernaut standards like SMS or widespread opponents like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, and even at launch, it seemed like it did the basics right. The outcry over its missing features was far less brutal than Allo's and with just a few small changes from Skype and Facetime, Duo managed to delight and impress. Simplicity and immediacy are the reasons I, and many others, fell in love with it.

Over the months, Duo has continued its faster progression compared to Allo.

Pokémon GO passes 100 million Play Store downloads in just a month

Holy crap, you people really like playing Pokémon. A combination of nostalgia, interesting augmented reality gameplay, straight-up social novelty, and (not least) being a free game has made Niantic's Pokémon GO rocket to 100 million downloads in the Play Store in just a month. Life isn't a race, but if it was, Pokémon GO would be so far ahead of every other game that they'd see it disappearing beneath the horizon.

Twitter And Viber Reach 500 Million Downloads On The Play Store

When it comes to app download milestones, we like to celebrate the 500 Million and 1 Billion mark here on Android Police and more often than not, the apps are from Google's own portfolio which gives them a significant head-start on the competition by the mere fact that they usually come pre-installed on all Android devices. We've also seen Facebook and WhatsApp hit the 1B milestone, and Skype and Instagram and Dropbox reach 500M.

Still, this amount of downloads is out of reach for many apps and only the elite popular ones can get to it. Now, we're celebrating the 500 Million downloads milestone for two apps you've sure heard about: Twitter and Viber.
