Android Auto's download count over on the Play Store is positively exploding. In a mere four months, the app has gone from 500 million installs to over a billion. Only six months before that, it was at 100 million. That's an incredible order of magnitude of growth in less than a year. Read More
Android Auto is on a roll this year. Merely six months ago, the Play Store app listing hit 100 million downloads, and already the app has now crashed through the half-billion barrier. Of course, most phones ship with the app pre-installed these days, easily inflating those numbers. Still, it's a milestone for Google's smart in-car infotainment system. Read More
While other apps recently celebrated download numbers surpassing billions, Android Auto only reached the milestone of 50 million installs on the Play Store yesterday. That's still an impressive number for an app that only works with a limited amount of car entertainment systems and that doesn't come pre-installed on most Android phones, unlike the 'big' Google apps such as Gmail, Search, or Calendar. The 1 billion download club on the Play Store is a pretty exclusive ones, with most apps belonging to Google's or Facebook's (including WhatsApp) conglomerate. Now Skype is joining this elite club and getting the coveted 1 billion round bubble on its Play Store listing.

I still remember when Google Street View was that pre-installed icon that I wished I could remove from my device but couldn't because it came as part of Google Maps. While many of those downloads will have resulted from the app being pre-installed on devices for the longest time, 1 billion is still an impressive milestone to reach. Read More
Of the two communication apps that Google announced last year at I/O, it's not a surprise that Duo found a larger appeal and better reception than Allo. It wasn't battling against existing juggernaut standards like SMS or widespread opponents like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, and even at launch, it seemed like it did the basics right. The outcry over its missing features was far less brutal than Allo's and with just a few small changes from Skype and Facetime, Duo managed to delight and impress. Simplicity and immediacy are the reasons I, and many others, fell in love with it.
Over the months, Duo has continued its faster progression compared to Allo. Read More
Holy crap, you people really like playing Pokémon. A combination of nostalgia, interesting augmented reality gameplay, straight-up social novelty, and (not least) being a free game has made Niantic's Pokémon GO rocket to 100 million downloads in the Play Store in just a month. Life isn't a race, but if it was, Pokémon GO would be so far ahead of every other game that they'd see it disappearing beneath the horizon. Read More
