Whoops, looks like Best Buy already put out some Pixel 3a XLs

It's been interesting watching all of these Pixel 3a/3a XL leaks happen all over the place – though it's hard to beat the insanity that led up to the Pixel 3 reveal last year – but it looks like Best Buy has taken the device's release for granted and jumped the gun a bit, as you can see in the photo above. Oh, boy.

Google's struggling Pixel sales invite comparison with Microsoft's smartphone failures

Alphabet — Google's parent company — had its Q1 earnings call yesterday amid its slowest growth in 3 years. A 17% year-on-year revenue increase has some investors concerned and Google CEO Sundar Pichai had to answer some tough questions about the company's hardware prospects. One analyst even went as far as to compare the Pixel phones with Microsoft's unsuccessful smartphone lineup.

[Update: New 'purple' render] Leaked Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL renders confirm what we already knew

In just a few weeks, during its I/O developer conference, Google will announce the long-awaited cheaper Pixel phones. In typical Google fashion, the 3a and 3a XL have already been the subject of full in-the-flesh leaks (more than once) so by this point we know exactly what to expect from them. As if further confirmation were needed, we're now seeing official-looking renders for the first time.

Verizon's Google Pixel exclusive finally appears to be ending - it's about time

Following a report from 9to5Google this morning, we were able to independently corroborate that T-Mobile plans to sell Google's current Pixel 3 and 3 XL smartphones, as well as add that the upcoming (and still unannounced) Pixel 3a and 3a XL will also be available in T-Mobile stores. The exact sale date is unclear, but my guess is that it will be timed against the launch of the new 3a devices, which we're expecting on May 7th. T-Mobile being added to the Pixel roster isn't just news in the sense of T-Mobile, though - it's a pretty big deal in regard to the larger strategy with the Pixel brand and what the end of Verizon exclusivity means, as well.

It's the first Monday of the month, and Google's monthly security patches are rolling out, as expected. Downloads for all Pixel phones are up now. [Update: It's back] Get a brand new Pixel 2 XL for just $400 ($300 off) from Best Buy

Phone deals sure are common these days, but this one is one of the better ones, I think. Best Buy is currently offering a brand new 64GB Pixel 2 XL for $399.99, a price that we'd usually only see on refurbs. This being Best Buy, however, the model in question is the Verizon variant, which means a locked bootloader.

Report confirms derpy Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL names

Last week, the folks at XDA Developers spotted the "Pixel 3a" and "Pixel 3a XL" names while digging through some code in the Connectivity Monitor app on the recent Android Q beta release. Today 9to5Google has been able to confirm, via an independent source, that those names aren't just placeholders for something else. For some reason that escapes us, Google is actually going to give the pair of upcoming mid-range phones the awkward "3a" moniker.

Weekend poll: If you have a Pixel, have you tried Android Q?

The Android Q Beta 1 became available for Google's Pixel devices (including the 2016 Pixel) last Wednesday. As I hope most of our readers would be aware, this advance look at the upcoming release isn't quite ready for prime time, but I'm curious to know how many of our readers decided to take the plunge. If you've got a compatible device, have you flashed Android Q?

Pixel Call Screen comes to Canada as a beta

Announced along with the Pixel 3, Call Screen lets you screen phone calls before you answer them, using Google's Assistant AI to ask who the caller is and what they want. It's excellent for avoiding those pesky spam callers and interruptions from unknown numbers. Call Screen has been available on all generations of Pixels in the US for a couple of months, recently added volume controls to hear the caller and saved transcripts, and now the feature is launching in beta in Canada.
