Google confirms it's still working on the November update for 2016 Pixels

It's not uncommon for phones to get slower and fewer updates as they get older. Actually, a lot of phones start out with slow updates. That's not the case with Google's Pixel phones, which come with multi-year update guarantees. So, owners of the first-gen Pixels have been concerned about the lack of a November update so far. We've reached out to Google, which says the OTA is in "final testing."

Possible Google phone codenames Bonito and Sargo pop up in latest ARCore update [APK Teardown]

ARCore updates generally just bring support to a set of both old and new Android devices, but every once in a while we're treated to something pretty unexpected. In the latest version, new profiles can be found for one, or maybe even two currently unreleased Google devices. The first of these devices bares the Bonito name, originally expected to be a mid-range Pixel phone. There's also a brand new fish-themed codename that may represent an entirely new device: Sargo.

[Update: Fix coming] Hilarious Pixel 3 XL bug adds a second notch to the side of the screen

The notch on the Pixel 3 XL is probably one of the most derided smartphone features in history, or, judging by our comments section, the worst thing to ever happen in the history of the universe. A wonderfully apt bug experienced by a small number of users manifests itself as an additional notch on the right side of the display, and it could hardly be funnier.

Jimmy Kimmel and Guillermo feature in more cringeworthy Pixel 3 advertisements

Google is really pushing celebrity endorsements with its Pixel 3 marketing, with the likes of Eminem already used to show off the phone's video recording capabilities. That was a feature on Jimmy Kimmel Live, but the whole show seems to be sponsored by Google, as you can see from these cheesy new spots.

Google's latest flagships are here, and as with the previous two generations, the headline feature is the camera. Yet more computational magic has made its way into the camera on the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, including something called Super Res Zoom. It's practically the 'enhance' feature we've all been waiting for, but how does it work?

Pixel 3 and 3 XL review: Come for the camera, stay for everything else

Android has become the most popular computing platform on the planet, but Google has had problems selling very many Android phones itself. It tried for years to make Nexus devices "a thing," but they never caught on outside the nerd demographic. With the debut of the Pixel program in 2016, the company took a different approach—it started building smartphones with consumers in mind. Google hasn't done everything perfectly, but it's gotten enough right that the first and second generation Pixels have been relatively easy to recommend. That brings us to the third-gen Pixels.

Over 75% of Pixel users are on Android Pie — why not more?

It's a well-known fact that software updates permeate the Android market at a crawl in comparison with iOS, but Google's own Pixel devices are an entirely different question. The Pixels are an opportunity for Google to brag that when it makes its own devices, it's able to surpass Apple in the updates arena — and that's exactly what Google's senior vice-president of hardware, Rick Osterloh, attempted to do in a recent tweet. However, the feedback may not have been what Osterloh was expecting.

Which Pixel 3 features are coming to older Pixel phones (and which will remain exclusive)

Google's Pixel 3 and 3 XL didn't pack a whole lot of hardware surprises, considering the unceasing deluge of leaks over recent months, but the software was another story. There were plenty of new camera features shown off at the Made by Google 2018 event, with oodles of machine learning magic to go around. Unfortunately for owners of older Pixel phones, not all of these new features will be coming to older handsets. For your convenience, we put together a list of all the major software changes that will (and won't) be coming to previous models.
