Google Sounds updated to v2.0, and it actually works now [APK Download]

Google laid the groundwork for a new app earlier this month, and now you can (maybe) use it. While the prospect of "Google Sounds" isn't the most exciting, it improves a part of the Android experience that has long needed an overhaul. Pixel devices will soon have a more expansive set of ringtones with a much prettier interface. The app didn't work when it first popped up, but v2.0 does, and it's rolling out now.

Call Screen rolling out to first-gen Pixel and Pixel XL

Call Screen debuted alongside the Pixel 3, allowing users to "screen" calls. While onstage, Google said that the feature would trickle down to the first- and second-generation Pixels in November. That ETA was right on the money for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, though we're only now hearing reports of it arriving on the first-gen Pixel and Pixel XL.

[Update: Theory shot down] The November OTA is finally rolling out to the first-gen Pixel and Pixel XL

Unlike most Android device makers, Google promises monthly updates for its Pixel smartphones. For the 2016 Pixels, that consisted of two years for system updates and another year of security OTAs. Owners of those phones were naturally concerned when the November security update never arrived while newer devices got quick OTAs. Well, now it has.

At the Pixel 3 launch event in NYC, Google showed off what it called "Night Sight," a feature that produced incredible looking photos in a near-absence of light. Google confirms it's still working on the November update for 2016 Pixels

It's not uncommon for phones to get slower and fewer updates as they get older. Actually, a lot of phones start out with slow updates. That's not the case with Google's Pixel phones, which come with multi-year update guarantees. So, owners of the first-gen Pixels have been concerned about the lack of a November update so far. We've reached out to Google, which says the OTA is in "final testing."

[Update: Live in Google Camera v6.1] The Pixel camera app will support external microphones starting October 18

The Pixel line is known for, above all else, its wicked cameras. But one problem a certain type of mobile photography enthusiast has run into with the phones is that they don't currently allow for the use of external microphones in the default camera app. That's set to change next week, though.

Over 75% of Pixel users are on Android Pie — why not more?

It's a well-known fact that software updates permeate the Android market at a crawl in comparison with iOS, but Google's own Pixel devices are an entirely different question. The Pixels are an opportunity for Google to brag that when it makes its own devices, it's able to surpass Apple in the updates arena — and that's exactly what Google's senior vice-president of hardware, Rick Osterloh, attempted to do in a recent tweet. However, the feedback may not have been what Osterloh was expecting.

During the course of the big Google hardware event on October 9th we heard about a number of new features, most relating to the three main products being unveiled — Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub. As the dust has mostly settled, Google thought it might be a good time to run us through some of the new features coming to Assistant on Pixel phones, new and old.

Google didn't backtrack on its first-gen Pixel and Pixel XL promise of lifetime full-resolution Google Photos backups

It's becoming a bit of a tradition: Every year, when Google's new smartphones are announced, we have to confirm once again that the first-generation Pixel and XL will keep benefiting from their lifetime original quality photo backups for life. This year, Google made a little snafu, seemingly backtracking on that promise, but it's all been fixed now.

Google Duplex rolls out starting in November on Pixel phones

One of the most impressive (and unsettling) I/O moments happened earlier this year when Google showed off Duplex, an AI chatbot that can place calls for you like a robotic personal assistant. Google wouldn't confirm its plans for Duplex at the time, but it's almost ready for the general public. Duplex is hitting Pixel phones starting next month, but it won't be available everywhere.
