Pixel 3 and 3 XL seem to have silently picked up HDR support in Netflix

Content quality in Netflix covers a range from old-school SD to a brain-searing 4K, further augmented by the option for HDR — which, in Netflix's case, is effectively an extended color gamut. We've kept an eye on which phones snag the feature, and based on recent reports, the Pixel 3 and 3 XL appear to have just picked it up.

January Pixel updates are out now: Pixel 3 video sound quality fix, 5X and 6P finally left behind

The latest pair of Google flagships haven't been without their controversies — it's effectively a yearly ritual as the tech enthusiast community picks apart a new Pixel phone's faults— but subsequent updates typically resolve the vast majority of these issues. Lucky for us, Google claims that another Pixel 3 problem has been resolved with January's update. The issue with low-quality audio while recording video is allegedly fixed. And downloads are posted and ready for sideloading if you're impatiently waiting for this fix to hit your own Pixel 3.

Pixel 3, 3 XL, and Pixel Stand are now available in Puerto Rico

When we say something is available in the US, I'm sure Puerto Ricans rush to see if this means their territory is included or not, and it's probably a coin toss between both options. For the Pixel 3 line-up, those of you in Puerto Rico could not buy the phones until now, but things have finally changed for the better.

Many Pixel 3 and 3 XL owners are having problems with call quality and connection issues

Put lightly, Google's latest pair of flagship phones have had some issues since their launch, and based on reports we've seen, we have yet another problem to add to our growing list. Google Sounds updated to v2.0, and it actually works now [APK Download]

Google laid the groundwork for a new app earlier this month, and now you can (maybe) use it. While the prospect of "Google Sounds" isn't the most exciting, it improves a part of the Android experience that has long needed an overhaul. Pixel devices will soon have a more expansive set of ringtones with a much prettier interface. The app didn't work when it first popped up, but v2.0 does, and it's rolling out now.

Verizon brings next-gen RCS messaging to Pixel 3 and 3 XL, starting today

RCS has been a long time coming, but the last few carrier holdouts in the US are finally starting to push out support for the "enhanced messaging" standard. Earlier this year, T-Mobile rolled the feature out to the Galaxy S7, then the S8, and now Verizon is joining in on the fun a bit earlier than originally expected, pushing out RCS support to Google's latest Pixel 3 and 3 XL starting this morning.

Get your December Pixel updates: 'Improved memory performance,' 2016 Pixels absent (again), Nexus 5X and 6P not left behind

It's the first Monday in a new month, so there's one thing you can typically expect from today: Google will release its monthly security patches for Pixels. There are a couple of surprises this month, though. The Nexus 5X and 6P are still getting updates, and December images for Google's 2016 Pixels are again curiously absent. The list of functional patches included this month is large, and it also includes "improved memory performance in certain circumstances," for the Pixel 3, 3XL, 2, and 2 XL.

[Update: Starting to arrive] Google Pixels will be able to save Call Screen transcripts later this year

Call Screen was arguably the most impressive feature Google debuted at the Pixel 3 launch event. Google's AI can answer the phone and ask what the purpose of the call is, providing an on-screen transcript of the conversation so you can decide if you want to talk to them or not. Right now, the transcripts disappear as soon as the call ends, but the ability to save has been confirmed for arrival later this year.
