Get your December Pixel updates: 'Improved memory performance,' 2016 Pixels absent (again), Nexus 5X and 6P not left behind

It's the first Monday in a new month, so there's one thing you can typically expect from today: Google will release its monthly security patches for Pixels. There are a couple of surprises this month, though. The Nexus 5X and 6P are still getting updates, and December images for Google's 2016 Pixels are again curiously absent. The list of functional patches included this month is large, and it also includes "improved memory performance in certain circumstances," for the Pixel 3, 3XL, 2, and 2 XL.

[Update: Starting to arrive] Google Pixels will be able to save Call Screen transcripts later this year

Call Screen was arguably the most impressive feature Google debuted at the Pixel 3 launch event. Google's AI can answer the phone and ask what the purpose of the call is, providing an on-screen transcript of the conversation so you can decide if you want to talk to them or not. Right now, the transcripts disappear as soon as the call ends, but the ability to save has been confirmed for arrival later this year.

Google used this ridiculous 5-phone case to fine-tune the Pixel 3's portrait mode

We were pretty impressed with how the Pixel 2's portrait mode worked, and Google's deep dive into the technical details was easily one of my favorite reads of last year. The company must have recognized what a hit it was, as a new explanation for the enhanced technologies behind the Pixel 3's depth-sensing tech was just published. As always nowadays, a big chunk of the changes are a result of neural network magic, but Google also has a "Frankenphone" five-Pixel case to thank for the Pixel 3's portrait mode progress.

Google Store Cyber Monday deals are live: Free Home Hub and $50 credit with Pixel 3 & 3 XL, $20 off custom cases, and more

Google has just pushed out what we expect to be the last of Thanksgiving season's deals. For Cyber Monday Google has killed the previous $150-200 discounts for the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, replacing them with a new promo that features a free Home Hub plus $50 in Google Store credit. Other discounts include a Daydream View for $40, customizable Pixel cases for $20 off, and a sort of smart home starter kit that comes with a Home Hub, Home, and Wifi three-pack for a hair under $450.

[Update: Dead] Price mistake: Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL glass screen protectors from Caseology are free right now

Caseology isn't a company traditionally known for its screen protectors, but it looks like its glass screen protector 2-packs for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are pretty well-reviewed. If you have a Pixel 3 or 3 XL and need a screen protector, these screen protectors are currently free — yes, $0.00 — on Caseology's site.

Get a combined $400 off a Pixel 3 or 3 XL via Project Fi, plus discounts on other phones

Google has dropped the price on its latest pair of flagships via the Google Store between $150-200, but Project Fi is set to one-up that offer. From now until next Tuesday (11/27) you can get a cumulative $400 off either the Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL — $200 in an up-front discount, and $200 in the form of bill credits.

Don't like bill credits? You can also get an up-front $400 off the LG V35 ThinQ or G7 ThinQ with activation. Love bill credits? You can get $350 towards service if you get the older Pixel 2 XL. And if you just want something cheap, the Moto G6 and Moto X4 are $150-250 off (with activation).

Another Pixel 3 bug: Camera encountering 'fatal error' in third-party apps

Google's latest flagship may have a class-leading camera, but it isn't without its bugs, and now we have another to add to the list. Unfortunately for some, using the camera in third-party apps may trigger an error which disables the camera entirely until you reboot. Even the stock camera app is non-functional until you power cycle the phone.

[Update x2: Credit being delivered] Google offering select customers $50 store credit with Pixel 3 pre-order

With the Pixel event wrapped up, many eager customers are likely scoping out the best place to pre-order the new devices. Buy one Pixel 3 or 3 XL, get another free-ish (via $799 service credit) on Project Fi

The latest Pixel phones are a little too spendy for some, but Google's Project Fi service has a deal that might make them more palatable. If you purchase two 2018 Pixels on a group plan, you can get a $799 service credit. That's sort of a "buy one, get one" deal as the base model Pixel 3 costs $799. You do still have to buy the phones, though.
