Call Screen is starting to hit some Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones

The Pixel 3 launched with Call Screen, which allows Assistant to "answer" by asking who's calling and offering ways to respond to calls. At the event, Google promised that the feature would trickle down to the older Pixel and Pixel 2 phones in November. We're halfway through the month, and it looks like Call Screen is indeed starting to hit some Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones.

Google's Night Sight launches for all Pixel phones today - get it now [APK Download]

At the Pixel 3 launch event in NYC, Google showed off what it called "Night Sight," a feature that produced incredible looking photos in a near-absence of light. Modified versions of the Google Camera app gave everyone willing to sideload them an early taste at the feature, but the wait is now over. And according to Google, Night Sight is rolling out for all Pixel devices, past and present, in the coming days.

November OTA files, factory images, and security patch notes for Pixel and Nexus devices are up

One of the best benefits to owning Google's hardware is the regular monthly updates, which deliver both bug fixes and security patches at a predictable schedule. Like clockwork, Google has just pushed out its November OTA files and Factory Images for Pixel and currently supported Nexus devices — or, at least, for most of them. Unfortunately, functional patches this month don't seem to include fixes for any of the recent Pixel 3 issues just yet. (Update: Looks like one fix was silently included.)

Now Playing History arrives on Pixel 2 and 2 XL

One of the coolest little features that came with the Pixel 2 was Now Playing, which would listen out for any music that was playing around you and try to identify it. It's basically an always-on Shazam that shows you the track names on the lockscreen.

There's always been one major drawback, though — if you're not looking at your phone while the song is playing, you'll miss out. Until the launch of the Pixel 3, there was no such thing as a list of all the songs previously identified. Thankfully, there is now, and it's starting to appear on Pixel 2 and 2 XL devices as promised.

[Update: Live in Google Camera v6.1] The Pixel camera app will support external microphones starting October 18

The Pixel line is known for, above all else, its wicked cameras. But one problem a certain type of mobile photography enthusiast has run into with the phones is that they don't currently allow for the use of external microphones in the default camera app. That's set to change next week, though.

The Pixel 3's Now Playing History is coming to Pixel 2 'soon'

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 both have a feature called Now Playing that automatically identifies music playing from nearby sources. It's a neat trick that's currently significantly better on the Pixel 3, which provides a history of identified songs. That functionality gap will be closing in the near future, though, when Now Playing History makes its way to the Pixel 2.

Over 75% of Pixel users are on Android Pie — why not more?

It's a well-known fact that software updates permeate the Android market at a crawl in comparison with iOS, but Google's own Pixel devices are an entirely different question. The Pixels are an opportunity for Google to brag that when it makes its own devices, it's able to surpass Apple in the updates arena — and that's exactly what Google's senior vice-president of hardware, Rick Osterloh, attempted to do in a recent tweet. However, the feedback may not have been what Osterloh was expecting.

Gamevice controller now available for Pixel 2, 2 XL, 3, and 3 XL

When touchscreen controls don’t cut it for games, you’re left with two options: switch to a dedicated gaming machine or add your own hardware controls. For the past few years, Wikipad has sold its Gamevice detachable controllers which work with several Samsung Galaxy models and iPhones. The Google devices were sadly left out of the fray, until now as the company released a version that supports the Pixel 2, 3, and their XL variants.
