Weekend poll: Knowing what we know now, are you interested in the new Pixels?

Google's event is coming, so we probably don't have much longer to wait before the company's next phones are announced. But it seems like plenty of information has already leaked out. We could still be in for some surprises, but the odds are that we have a good idea of what to expect.

We know what they (probably) look like. We think it will likely have some interesting additions like a squeezable frame, and we have a decent idea about the specs that should be included. There have even been leaks for upcoming software.

Based on what you've seen so far, we'd like to know how many of you are interested in the new phone.

[Update x2: Confirmed hoax] Leaked slides hint at what might be the "Ultra pixel" phone by Google

On further inspection and after much more discussion, the Android Police team has come to the consensus that the slides shown in this video are, at the very least, probably not representative of anything we'll see at Google's October 4th event, if not outright fabrications.

As we close in on Google's October 4th launch event, a new beta release of the Google app itself is rolling out with hints about some of the things we may hear about during the presentation. In this update, we find further confirmation that one or both of the new Pixels will include pressure-sensitive sides that wake up Google Assistant. And we can look forward to routines, which are basically shortcuts capable of taking multiple actions.

Opinion: The new Pixels will have the same problem as the current ones - they're just Android phones

A little-acknowledged but persistent problem has plagued every Google handset since the original Nexus One: Their most defining characteristics - Google's services and Android itself - are not unique to them.

With each new Google phone, consumers do often get their first chance to buy (well, assuming they're in stock - a big assumption) a device that ships with the latest version of Android. Or, they can wait four or five months and buy one that ships with that same version of Android from another, better-known vendor, typically with all of the major improvements and new features intact. Such a limited window of exclusivity on a highly iterative and admittedly quite geeky facet of a product all but ensures most people cannot be bothered to understand any of this.

Pixel 2 XL passes through FCC, confirms LG as manufacturer and not much else

About a month ago, the smaller, HTC-made Pixel 2 made its way through the FCC, revealing the device's Snapdragon 835 processor and an "Active Edge" squeezable frame. Now, its big brother has stopped by for the same treatment. Unfortunately, not much information can be gleaned from the various documents on the FCC's site, but this is progress.

Opinion: The iPhone X will overshadow the new Pixels, and Google needs a battle plan

Today, Apple announced the iPhone X to the fanfare of hundreds of members of the media, investors, and its own employees at a large event in the company's new purpose-built Steve Jobs Theater, housed within its brand-new mega-campus. Next month, Google will announce the second generation of its Pixel smartphones, alongside a handful of other new products, at what will likely be a comparatively small affair attended almost exclusively by technology journalists. It will probably be in a nice - but decidedly rented - event space in San Francisco.

Apple will ship millions of iPhone Xs before the year is out, assuming supply is not an issue.
