These days, almost all manufacturer apps can be updated via the Play Store. This makes updating them with new designs and features a lot easier, as you might have glimpsed from our teardowns. Most recently for the Google Phone app, v15 added a white navigation bar, assisted dialing for international travelers, and some more. We didn't spot any major changes in Phone v16, but it appears that it fixes an issue people were having with receiving calls while they had a Bluetooth device connected. Read More
A few days ago, some users started receiving update notifications on their Pixel 2 and were wondering what was happening since, according to the official documentation, they were seemingly on the latest build number. Now Google's official pages have been updated to include these new factory images and OTA files for specific devices on certain carrier versions.
First, the Pixel 2 on Verizon is getting a bump to build number OPM2.171019.016. Then the Nexus 5X on Telstra and Softbank is getting an update to build OPM5.171019.014. And finally, the Nexus 6P on Softbank only (no Telstra) is getting the same build number as its smaller sibling: OPM5.171019.014. Read More
Prototypes are always cool to see, but us consumers don't often get to do so. It's nice to take a look at how the designs of products evolve from the drawing board all the way to our homes, pockets, and backpacks. An interview with Google hardware designer Ivy Ross recently went up on The Keyword, and embedded within are photos of several Google products' prototypes. Read More
The Pixel Buds are priced exactly the same as Apple's AirPods at $159, but that's more than most people are willing to pony up for earbuds. If you were on the lookout for a discount and you've also been considering a Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL, perhaps the Google Store's latest deal of 50% off will entice you. Read More
I'd wager that most owners of Pixel phones use the fingerprint sensors on the back to unlock their phones, but there are circumstances in which using the backup PIN, pattern, or password is necessary. Many Pixel owners, myself included, have noticed that it's become rather difficult to swipe the lockscreen up on Android 8.1 Oreo. Google is aware of the problem and is looking into it. Read More
Google has this nasty habit of making the prettiest Pixels the hardest to get. Remember the Really Blue limited edition Pixel last year? This year, the Kinda Blue variant is only available in the smaller 5-inch form factor, and it's been exclusive to Verizon all this time. That changes today. You can now get the Kinda Blue Pixel 2 on Project Fi as well. Read More
When the Pixel 2 was announced in October, the new At A Glance widget at the top of the launcher was introduced and said to have calendar events, with traffic and flight updates coming later. Then when the Pixel 2 launched, traffic updates were already there as well, but flight info was still missing. That's been there for several weeks, I first noticed it around mid-December when I was traveling to Dubai, but it could have been added even earlier. However, Artem just realized it was there for him a couple of days ago.
Since not everyone might be aware of this new addition (you need to have an upcoming flight to see it) or since maybe the toggle is turned off by default on your device, we thought we'd share the news with you so you can make sure you have flight updates enabled on At A Glance, if you're using the default Pixel Launcher that is. All of Google's own cases for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are on sale at the Google Store, but the discounted prices could affect whether you receive free shipping on your order.

Google is getting an early start in 2018 by rolling out the monthly patches for Nexus and Pixel devices. The OTA files and full system images are available a few days earlier than usual, and devices should begin seeing updates in the not too distant future. It looks like several devices have two different builds available this month, so you'll have to grab the right one if you just can't wait. Read More
Portrait mode became one of the most popular features for cameras in 2017. Apple's iPhone lineup, the Galaxy Note8, the OnePlus 5T, and even the Essential Phone have it in their camera apps. However, owners of older phones were left out of the fun. Luckily, serial Google Camera modder Charles Chow has created a modded Google Camera APK with portrait mode on board for the first-generation Pixel and Pixel XL, the Nexus 6P, and the Nexus 5X.
