Google posts Nexus/Pixel system images and OTA files for January 2018 patches

Google is getting an early start in 2018 by rolling out the monthly patches for Nexus and Pixel devices. The OTA files and full system images are available a few days earlier than usual, and devices should begin seeing updates in the not too distant future. It looks like several devices have two different builds available this month, so you'll have to grab the right one if you just can't wait.

Get the Pixel 2's portrait mode on your first-gen Pixel phones, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X with this mod [APK Download]

Portrait mode became one of the most popular features for cameras in 2017. Apple's iPhone lineup, the Galaxy Note8, the OnePlus 5T, and even the Essential Phone have it in their camera apps. However, owners of older phones were left out of the fun. Luckily, serial Google Camera modder Charles Chow has created a modded Google Camera APK with portrait mode on board for the first-generation Pixel and Pixel XL, the Nexus 6P, and the Nexus 5X.

[Update: No longer possible] Verizon Pixel 2 bootloader can be unlocked via a simple fastboot command

The biggest disadvantage to picking up the smaller Pixel 2 on Verizon's network is the locked bootloader. Big Red dictates that the phones it sells have to be locked down tight. That's a problem if you're into ROMs or if you'd like to root without an exploit. However, the folks over in the XDA forums have discovered a trivially simple way of unlocking the bootloader which is every bit as easy as the typical method for non-carrier locked Pixel 2 phones.

There are many reports of spontaneous access point reboots, crashes, and intermittent connection issues for those using mesh network access points with devices running Android Oreo.

Some Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners claiming included headphone adapter doesn't work

The second-generation Pixel phones have had some struggles. Following user reports of problems with the OLED display, strange effects when taking photos of LED lights, seemingly muted microphones, a mysterious buzzing noise, random reboots, and crashes in Android Auto mode, it has been a tumultuous time for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners. Multiple users in the Google Product Forums have now claimed that the USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapters are not working on their phones, with sound instead being played through the device.

[Deal Alert] Verizon Pixel 2 and 2 XL are $550 off (GC + bill credit), original Pixel is $200 off (GC) at Target

It's a fantastic time to be in the market for a Pixel 2 or 2 XL, especially if you're a Verizon customer and live near a Target store. Hot on the heels of a Google Store deal offering $50-75 off the latest Pixel phones, Target is offering a $250 gift card if you activate a Pixel 2 or 2 XL on a new Verizon line or a current one, and Verizon is offering a $300 bill credit spread out over 24 months. That adds up to a rather hefty $550 off Google's latest smartphones, if you're fine with some creative math.

[Deal Alert] Pixel 2 and 2 XL are $50-$75 off at the Google Store

Google's Pixel 2 and 2 XL might not be without their drawbacks, but the pair are still excellent phones with some of the best software and cameras out there. The most significant real disadvantage to each has been the price tag. At $649-949, they weren't exactly cheap. But, for a short time, Google has discounted both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL—$50 in the case of the Pixel 2, and $75 in the case of the 2 XL. You can nab both over at the Google Store

[UK Deal Alert] £50 off a Google Pixel 2 or 2 XL, plus a free Home Mini

Anyone who kept an eye on the price of the original Google Pixels will have noticed that they were seldom discounted, especially in the UK, which was a real pain for anyone waiting for the price to drop before picking one up.
