[Update: Final fix due with Android P] June OTA update may have made the Pixel 2 XL much slower to wake up

One of the primary selling points of Google's Pixel devices is how fast they are compared to other Android devices. So, owners are understandably irked that Google's latest OTA update seems to have slowed down something you probably do dozens of times per day. According to multiple tips and online complaints, the June OTA made the Pixel 2 XL much slower to wake up from sleep.

6 of our favorite (non-Prime-Day) tech deals this week: Gear 360, two kinds of G6 phones, and more

The past week has been absolutely overrun with deals, due in no small part to the arrival of Amazon's annual Prime Day. Here are some of our favorite deals from the past few days, ones that are both still available and aren't exclusive to Prime users.

[Deal Alert] Half off Google Pixel 2 & 2 XL first-party Carbon fabric and Rock cases at Best Buy

The first-party fabric and Google Earth Live cases for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL were among our favorites when we reviewed them, but the high price tag associated with Google's self-branded cases probably prevented many of our readers from picking one up. Thankfully for them, Best Buy has marked down the Carbon and Rock cases for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL by half.

The Pixel 2 XL's oleophobic coating is so bad I almost don't want to use the phone anymore

The Pixel 2 XL's oleophobic coating is so bad I almost don't want to use the phone anymore

When the Pixel 2 XL came out, there was a great deal of consternation about the LG-made OLED panel. I was firmly in the "it's fine" camp, but my opinion has changed over time. No, I didn't suddenly decide the blue shift was a deal breaker. The oleophobic coating on the glass is just so bad that my phone is constantly a smeared, gross mess. It's so annoying that I almost don't want to use this phone, which I otherwise adore.

7 of our favorite tech sales, discounts, and deals this week: Pixelbooks, Echo Show, Moto phones, and more

Last weekend we really wanted to bring you a roundup of our favorite tech deals of the previous few days, but when it came time to catalog them all and share them with you, all the good ones had expired. That's the problem with a lot of these offers — they may be really compelling deals, but they can also be seriously fleeting. Here are seven of the best from the past week:

[Update: Rolling out in June OTA] Google has a fix for Pixel 2 XL proximity sensor issues, expect it 'in the coming months'

[Update: Rolling out in June OTA] Google has a fix for Pixel 2 XL proximity sensor issues, expect it 'in the coming months'

Back in October, we reported on a change in the Android 8.1 release that made the proximity sensor behave differently. Unlike before, it wouldn't turn Ambient Display off when you covered the sensor, something we saw even in 8.0 for the newer Pixel 2s. That may or may not have been intentional, but it seems there were also other issues relating to the proximity sensor in 8.1, more about which you can read in this mega thread on the Pixel User Community forum.

Many of the problems specifically affect the Pixel 2 XL, and range from the sensor being confused by things like screen protectors, causing 'always on' Ambient Display to turn off unexpectedly, to not being able to use the device at all during calls.
