Essential announces plans to skip 8.0 Oreo release in favor of 8.1, citing stability concerns

Essential—the phone company led by Android co-founder Andy Rubin—has had some difficulty in getting a stable 8.0 Oreo update released. After three beta releases, the company is not quite satisfied that the update is ready for general release. Because of these protracted issues, Essential has announced plans to skip the 8.0 release entirely in favor of 8.1, which will "push the public release back a couple weeks," according to the company.

[Insane Deal Alert] Essential Phone plus 360 Camera for just $399

The Essential Phone has kept getting cheaper recently, but we never dreamed we'd see a deal like this. Android's answer to the iPhone X, with its much less conspicuous notch, has been gradually dropping in price since it launched at $699 in the summer. We've recently seen it as low as $449.99 at various retailers, with its 360 Camera accessory also down to $49.99 (from $199.99). But Amazon now has a crazy deal offering the pair for just $399. This could be the best deal of the year.

Essential Phone goes down to an incredible $300 with friends and family discount

The Essential Phone wasn't at the top of our list when it came out, and while there were a lot of little reasons for that, the prime determiner of its value—and our disappointment—was the price. At $700 it wasn't really worth it. But when the phone dropped down to $500 earlier this week our opinion changed drastically. And now it turns out there's even a way to get one for just $300 plus taxes. That is, if you are lucky enough to know someone that plopped down the $700 full price.

Pure White Essential Phone can now be ordered at Essential.com

The Essential Phone is already a gorgeous phone in its debut Moon Black, but us tech enthusiasts seem to have a thing for panda-themed phones (black front, white back). Just look at how many people went crazy over the 'Black & White' Pixel 2 XL. But before the Pixel 2 XL was even unveiled, Essential already had a Pure White version of the PH-1 in the works. And now, it's finally available.

Essential Phone is now shipping

Android co-founder Andy Rubin officially unveiled the first smartphone from his new startup, the Essential Phone, back in May of this year. With a near bezel-less design, flagship specifications, and stock Android, the phone certainly seemed like a winner. But the promised 30-day shipping period came and went, with nary a word from Essential.

Sprint will be the only carrier selling the Essential phone

After months of rumors, Android co-founder Andy Rubin unveiled the Essential PH-1 phone last month. The phone has high-end specs, nearly no bezel at the top or sides, and optional accessories like a 360-degree camera. But a phone from a startup was likely a hard sell to US carriers, and it seems the only carrier that wanted it was Sprint.

Andy Rubin's Essential raises $300 million, investment valuation set at around $1 billion for the startup

Essential, Andy Rubin's new phone company, was able to raise $300 million in a recent financing round. Investors must have been impressed by Essential and its future projects, such as the PH-1 and Essential Home. The total valuation for the company determined during financing was set somewhere between $900 million and $1 billion. These are all pretty big numbers for a company that hasn't actually made anything yet, but the weight of Andy Rubin at the helm must have been a contributing factor.

[Update: New details plus Andy Rubin interview] The Essential phone is official, with an edge-to-edge display and the world's smallest 360-degree camera accessory

As early as January, we learned that Android co-founder Andy Rubin's new hardware company was preparing to release a bezel-less smartphone sometime soon, and the anticipation has been building ever since. The new device was further teased with a mostly-concealed image, followed by a Twitter account just a few days ago, through which it was announced that May 30th would be the reveal date. That day has finally come, and it appears to have been well worth the wait as Essential is not only launching the expected phone, the PH-1, but also the world's smallest 360-degree camera attachment and a standalone smart home device.
