OnePlus suspends latest Open Beta update after it bricked some 5/5T phones

Oh, boy, that's not good. Due to a critical error with the last Open Beta that ended up soft-bricking some 5 and 5T devices, OnePlus is completely pulling the new build for those phones and for the 6/6T. Oops.

OnePlus 6 and 6T wrecking audio quality by using the wrong mic in some apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp

The OnePlus 6T may have been our favorite phone of 2018, but it wasn't without its problems. Recently, we reported that OnePlus phones appear to be resetting battery optimization settings randomly, but it appears that OnePlus 6 and 6T may also have some good, old-fashioned microphone troubles, too: Many are experiencing issues with call and recording quality in third-party apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp.

You can now rebrand your T-Mobile OnePlus 6T without unlocking the bootloader

One the best phones of last year, the OnePlus 6T marked a new chapter for the Chinese company. Part of the progress involved a deal with T-Mobile, which came with its pros and cons. Since it's a different SKU from the international dual-SIM variant (such as you'd buy straight from OnePlus), the Tmo version is excluded from things like the Open Beta program. But some savvy people over in the XDA forums figured out a way to rebrand the Tmo 6T to the international version without unlocking the bootloader.

Yes, it was just five short years ago that we started seeing the roguish and somewhat tiresome "Never Settle" slogan plastered all over social media. I will admit to some early skepticism of the company, but here we are five years later, and the OnePlus 6T is Android Police's phone of the year.

The Oppo R17 Pro and OnePlus 6T are twins separated at birth - but why?

OnePlus is something of a Cinderella story in the smartphone world. It seemed to appear out of nowhere, releasing a phone with numbers that matched the best the likes of Samsung and HTC had to offer - and did it at half the price. The OnePlus One went viral in a way few products do, and the rest is history (well, as much as four years can be “history”). OnePlus just keeps improving on that formula, most recently with the excellent OnePlus 6T, which I’ve had a chance to use for the last few weeks. And it really is a great phone - we even gave it our ‘Phone of the Year’ award.

Android Police's 2018 Smartphone of the Year is the OnePlus 6T

Android Police often does picks for our top smartphones of any given year - and you can see those phones right here in our 2018 “Most Wanted” article. But this year, we’ve decided to single out one device for attention in particular. The smartphone we thought did most to change the game. To go above and beyond competitors and offer a unique and compelling experience to buyers. And, crucially, that we felt constituted a reasonable value in doing so (that’s not to say it needed to be inexpensive, but that its price was justifiable).

After the editorial staff cast its votes, a winner emerged: the OnePlus 6T - narrowly beating out the Pixel 3.
