The most important Android phones and tablets of the 2010s

The second decade of the 21st century is coming to a close, and there's a lot to look back on. The Rosetta spacecraft made the first successful landing on a comet, the United States had two presidents, a whole lot of Marvel movies came out, and we got the first close-up photos of Pluto.

The 2010s also saw the rise of the smartphone as a product category. While there were plenty of smartphones in the 2000s, they didn't become widespread consumer-level devices until the introduction of the iPhone in 2008 and subsequent release of the first Android devices in 2009.

HTC Says One M8 Users In The UK Will Get Android 5.1 And Sense 7 In August, M7 Has No Schedule Yet

[Update: OTA Link] HTC One M8 Google Play Edition Is Being Updated To Android 5.1 Now, M7 GPE Coming Soon

The Google Play Edition program seems to have been mostly forgotten by Google and its hardware partners, but at least those devices that were released are still getting steady updates. The latest one to be blessed with Android 5.1 is HTC's One M8 Google Play Edition from last year. [Update] AT&T's HTC One M7 IS Getting Its Lollipop Update Today

HTC's US VP of Product, Mo Versi had some good news for owners of the One M7 on AT&T yesterday evening. After months of waiting, the Lollipop OTA is starting this very day. "Tomorrow" in the tweet below refers to today, March 31st.

HTC originally hoped to have all its One devices updated a few months ago, but that deadline came and went before it could push Lollipop ROMs through the carrier maelstrom.

HTC Releases Lollipop Kernel Source For One M7 Developer Edition

HTC has been rolling out Lollipop OTAs to its various One devices in the last few weeks, but kernel source is also showing up. Most of the source code has been for the One M8 so far, but now the developer edition M7 has some Lollipop kernel source too.

Before this release, the only M7 with Lollipop kernel source was the Google Play Edition. It makes sense the developer edition would be next as there are still a lot of M7 variants on carriers that don't have an OTA. Developers can use kernel source to build and improve ROMs and troubleshoot device-specific issues in apps.

The HTC Eye Experience Will Bring Auto-Selfie, Split Capture, Crop-Me-In, And More Features To The M7, M8, And Other Devices

The first thing HTC announced at its Double Exposure event today wasn't new hardware. No, the company was very eager to share its new software, which it has coined the EYE Experience. This term encapsulates a full range of features all aimed at making your HTC phone a better tool for taking photos.

Let's run through the features. One addition is an Auto-Selfie (ignore the name and bear with me here) function that will automatically take a photo with the front-facing camera after users have framed the shot and held the phone still for two seconds. There's also the ability to use voice prompts, such as "Say Cheese" to take a photo or "Action" to record a video without having to reach for a button.
