As part of Prime Day, NVIDIA is offering the Shield and Shield Pro on Amazon for $50 off their respective MSRPs, in addition to throwing in a free second gamepad (Shield's gamepad is, by the way, excellent). Normally, the cost of a Shield 16GB console with two gamepads would be $259 - today it's just $149. The 500GB Shield Pro with a second controller would normally be $359, but for Prime Day, it's $249. That's a heck of a deal, and while Shield promotions aren't exactly rare, they're usually either a flat discount or a free remote - this deal hasn't happened before, and offers the greatest net discount on the console and its accessories we've seen yet. NVIDIA has released an update for its Shield Portable console device today, namely update version 110. The OTA doesn't add anything new, but it resolves some long-standing bugs and gives the device some much-needed security patches. You can see what's changed (rather, been fixed) in the official changelog from NVIDIA's forums, below.
Updates SHIELD security to the latest Android Security Bulletins
Fixes a bug that causes the LED brightness level to reset after a system restart
Resolves instances of the audio volume fluctuating during video playback
Fixes a bug that could result in SHIELD becoming unresponsive after lid close and reopen
Resolves instances of the ‘Optimizing apps’ message appearing in error
The Shield Portable is the oldest Shield device, having been announced over three years ago. Read More
NVIDIA's latest update for Shield - the only Android TV device worth buying, frankly - is out, and it adds a whole bunch of stuff. Like Plex Media Server. Which goes quite well with today's giveaway of a 500GB Shield Pro. With Plex Media Server on your Shield, you'll not only be able to watch all your Plex content, you'll be able to store it on the Shield itself.
Shield is powerful enough to transcode all your videos and serve them up on your network, eliminating the need for a standalone Plex box on your network. Shield just does it all. Read More
I'm a big fan of atmospheric games that immerse you in their gameplay and story - Machinarium, The Wolf Among Us, and Lifeline are some of my favorites on Android. After being available on Android TV for almost a year, Never Alone, from developer Upper Line Games (published by E-Line Media) is now available on Android phones and tablets, and it looks like it's going to hit it out of the park.
Never Alone is based on Native Alaskan culture and experiences, with the Cook Inlet Tribal Council, a non-profit organization that works with indigenous people, assisting with development on the game. Read More
The next update to the SHIELD TV firmware will come with a built-in Plex media server. This is a big deal, as it will let people who own this Android TV box use something other than an always-on PC to store their media library.
Now the Plex Media Server app has found its way into the Play Store ahead of the firmware update. Read More
The SHIELD TV is the best Android TV device around, even if its competition isn't up to much. With NVIDIA's Tegra X1 architecture and an available 500GB hard drive on the Pro model, one might wonder why something like the fan-favorite Plex software wasn't available before. (Plex was previously installed on the SHIELD, but only as a client for streaming media from another server.) Well soon enough it will be: NVIDIA and Plex announced that the next update to the SHIELD firmware will include a built-in Plex media server. Read More
iPlayer is a treat from the BBC to its viewers in the UK. The broadcasting network produces content, and it lets locals view them from the comfort of their mobile devices. Think of it as the relationship seemingly every other popular Internet streaming service has with the US, at least initially.
Now folks living on that small little island across the pond can also stream content to their Android TV, as long as it's a SHIELD box. NVIDIA has made an app, with the BBC's permission, exclusively for SHIELD Android TV.
Yup, it's an app that you can only use in a certain country on a particular device. Read More
