Hands-On With NVIDIA GeForce Now: Is The World Finally Ready For A Game Streaming Service?

Let's get this out of the way right up front: I'm not a PC gamer. I'm not really a gamer at all; while I of course love to kick back with the occasional game, I don't consider myself a member of the "hardcore" gaming community by any measure. I've had every Playstation since the original (and, in fact, still have the 2, 3, and 4), but even then I'm an enthusiast at best. My favorite games of all time are basically anything from the Metal Gear series, Red Dead Redemption, and The Last of Us. You can probably already tell from that list what kind of stuff I like to play — I'm a third-person action gamer all the way.

NVIDIA Announces GeForce Now, Its Next-Generation Game Streaming Service Designed And Built Exclusively For SHIELD Devices

It's no secret that NVIDIA has been working on a game streaming service for quite a while — it's called GRID, and anyone with a SHIELD device has been able to test it out for the past several months. Today, the company is announcing the result of all that testing: GeForce Now.

GeForce Now is, at its core, a gaming service. It lets subscribers stream over 50 high-end PC games (at launch), as well as buy and play others instantly. That's pretty huge in itself — without the need to wait for hours for downloads, it removes a lot of the hassle of picking up something new to play.

NVIDIA Quietly Extends The Free Period Of Its GRID Game Streaming Service For SHIELD Owners Into September

NVIDIA's GRID gaming service, which streams high-end PC games to the company's Android-powered hardware at extremely low latency, has been promoted as one of its best exclusive features. Unfortunately, NVIDIA seems to be having a lot of trouble getting over the last few hurdles to actually launch the thing. GRID has been in beta since late 2013, and was scheduled to launch its paid service in July as of the SHIELD Android TV announcement. Now it looks like the full launch has been pushed back again.

Shortly after the SHIELD TV's product launch in June NVIDIA announced that it would be bumping the free preview period of GRID to July 31st, with a full service launch in August.

NVIDIA SHIELD Set-Top Box Hands-On And Gaming Breakdown

In a lot of ways, NVIDIA's SHIELD (not to be confused with this SHIELD or that SHIELD) is a typical set-top box. And in many ways it isn't: though NVIDIA has built its living room invader on Android like the previous products in the line, the OS underneath is merely a means to an end. And that end is selling you games, in every form and fashion that the company can come up with.

SHIELD will release its Android TV-powered console sometime in May with a suggested retail price of $199. We took a good long look at both the hardware and the games that NVIDIA hopes you'll play on it.

NVIDIA Adds Saints Row IV To Its Streaming GRID Service, Alan Wake And Metro: Last Light Coming Soon

One of the lesser-known portions of the custom game software on NVIDIA's SHIELD Portable and SHIELD Tablet is GRID, an OnLive-style streaming PC gaming system. It allows owners to play a selection of full-feature PC games streamed from NVIDIA's own virtualized systems at a data center, no personal gaming PC required. The service is still in beta, but has been growing steadily since its introduction a little over two years ago. By the beginning of March, 40 PC games will be available for free to SHIELD owners.

The next PC game added to the service, live this morning, is Saints Row 4.

NVIDIA Announces Lollipop Release Date, Open GRID Preview, Half-Life 2 Episode One, And More For SHIELD Tablet

Have you ever heard the phrase "when it rains, it pours?" Well, at NVIDIA HQ, they like to make it storm. Those guys don't know about a little thing called "subtlety," nor do I think they care. They're like "oh, we want to announce something? Let's just save it up and do it all at once." So that's what they did. I like their style.

Here we go.

First off - and maybe most importantly - the Lollipop update is coming for SHIELD Tablet. We already knew that, but now we know when: November 18th. That's less than a week away.

Those SHIELD owners who are lucky enough to be eligible for NVIDIA's GRID game streaming service, you've got two new options for cloud-based entertainment today. For those of you who don't frequent the PC gaming scene, Saints Row is sort of the madman's alternative to Grand Theft Auto. By the third installment the series had morphed into a pastiche of M-rated gaming in general and the open-world crime genre in particular.
