Huawei is keeping up its attempts to break into the saturated U.S. smartphone market with its sub-brand Honor. It started with the 5X and continued with the Honor 8. The premise is to bring mid- or high-tier specs and slap them in a premium chassis, then sell it at a very affordable price. However, as good as those devices have been, their weakness has been the software (again). Read More
OnePlus is on a roll with these updates for its 2016 flagships. Just earlier this month, the OnePlus 3 and 3T received Android 7.1.1 via the Open Beta program, but now the new OS version is rolling out to the stable channel users via an OTA. That was quick. Read More
When Google announced that the Assistant would start rolling out to devices running Android 6.0 and above, there was one little detail we didn't pay close attention to: the official blog post only talked about "smartphones," "Android phones," and "Android partner phones." Tablets? Nada. So when the rollout started earlier this month and more and more phones received Assistant with nary a sign of a tablet getting the same treatment, many of our readers were left wondering: will tablets get Assistant?
We've reached out to Google and got an official answer that's sure to break some hearts:
The Assistant will be available on Android Marshmallow and Nougat phones with Google Play Services, this does not include tablets.
Nexus 6 owners had cause to rejoice a few days ago when Android 7.1.1 finally hit the beastly phone. It sat on 7.0 for quite a bit after its younger brethren received the update. However, now it seems that the celebration has come to a slight hiccup. It appears that the Shamu is suffering from a speakerphone echo bug. Yikes. Read More
Motorola used to be just as good as, if not better than, Google itself when it came to updates. On more than one occasion, a Motorola device would be updated to the latest Android version before the Nexus rollout was complete. Unfortunately, Motorola under Lenovo's ownership has a more relaxed approach to updates, leaving customers annoyed and upset (and rightly so). Read More
If you've been waiting with bated breath for Samsung to fulfill its promise to upgrade the Galaxy S6 series to Android 7.0, you can stop waiting... assuming you have one of the GSM unlocked models of the S6 and S6 Edge, that is. According to German tech site Giga.de, users in Europe are starting to see the Nougat update sent out to their phones, starting with at least one S6 Edge owner in Switzerland and continuing in the comments. That means that mainland Europe and the UK are probably looking at updates sometime soon, with the usual delays for localization and server rollout. Read More
We're finally getting to the point where Nougat software updates are coming at a steady clip from manufacturers. ASUS is getting in a few for its midrange phone hardware - just last week we saw the ZenFone 3 Deluxe get its software update (that really should have come out in December at the latest). Now it's the non-deluxe model's turn, specifically the ZE520KL and ZE552KL variants. Those are the 5.2- and 5.5-inch versions of the unlocked GSM phone, if you haven't memorized the alphabet soup of those model numbers. Read More
It's that time again—Google has updated the developer dashboard with new platform distribution numbers. After bidding Froyo a long-overdue farewell a few months ago, there hasn't been a great deal of movement. Nougat got off to a slow start, but it's finally picking up steam this month. It's still only on a fraction of devices, though. Read More
The Galaxy S7 Active is a more rugged version of Samsung's flagship, exclusive to AT&T customers. AT&T started to update its Galaxy S7 and S7 edge devices last month, and starting today, the Nougat update for the S7 Active is rolling out. Read More
Verizon used to be a wasteland when it came to Android updates, but things are better these days. Sometimes it's even ahead of the curve. The Nougat update for the Moto Z play isn't exactly ahead of schedule, but today's rollout isn't bad for a non-flagship phone. Read More
