Android 7.0 Nougat is rolling out to Nexus devices starting today

Android 7.0 Nougat is rolling out to Nexus devices starting today

Today is the day we've all been waiting for since March when Google unexpectedly dropped the Android N developer preview on us. Android 7.0 Nougat, as it's now known, is officially done and rolling out to Nexus devices, the Pixel C, and the General Mobile 4G. There aren't any big surprises here—the final build is virtually identical to the last developer preview, but it should be more stable and it'll be on your phone or tablet very soon.

Material design spec adds guidance on 'up' vs 'back' navigation, strong words for notification spam, and more in August update

Material design spec adds guidance on 'up' vs 'back' navigation, strong words for notification spam, and more in August update

After adding an entirely new section on motion - and new guidance on onboarding and growth - back in May, Google Design is back with another update to the material design spec.

The August 2016 release includes new documentation for Nougat's new notifications, confirming and acknowledging user actions, and widgets, with updates coming to the navigation and full-screen mode sections.

Nougat's notifications, as we've seen through a handful of preview releases now, have a somewhat more complex or info-rich design compared to previous generations. In its new section on notifications, the spec breaks down all the bits and pieces from headers to action areas.

Canadian carrier Telus says Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P Nougat updates coming August 22nd

Canadian carrier Telus says Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P Nougat updates coming August 22nd

At this point we're just waiting for Google to release Android 7.0 (and the new Nexus devices that come with it) to the masses. The company never gives exact dates for this kind of thing, though a vague "fall" pattern generally leads us to expect new Android hardware and software sometime between August and October. According to the official support forum for Telus, an exclusively Canadian cell carrier, Nougat updates will be coming in less than a week.

LG G5 gets very limited 7.0 Nougat preview

LG G5 gets very limited 7.0 Nougat preview

Before today, only Google devices, the Sony Xperia Z3, and the Sony Xperia X Performance had Android 7.0 previews built for them. Now, another Android has joined the Nougat ranks—the LG G5. Whether you like the G5 or not (David sure didn't), it's getting a Nougat preview right now, albeit with more than a few catches.

Latest Google App beta adds an animation for the Nexus Launcher's search button

Latest Google App beta adds an animation for the Nexus Launcher's search button

If you're rocking the leaked Nexus Launcher on your device, you might have noticed at least one animation wasn't working. With the current release version of the Google Search APK, tapping on the search button brings up the search bar, but without the fluid animations we've come to expect from Material Design.

Now you may be thinking to yourself, "does one animation really matter?" And the answer is always yes. Reddit user /u/parentskeepfindingme noticed that in the latest Google App beta, there's actually an animation! Here's a capture we took of that new animation.

Xperia X Performance now eligible for Android N beta testing, with a few catches

Xperia X Performance now eligible for Android N beta testing, with a few catches

Many were surprised when Sony began offering an Android N Developer Preview build for the Xperia Z3. Nobody expected a two-generation old Sony flagship to join a beta program that only Google devices were included in. Sony is now following up by offering up an Android N beta build for the Xperia X Performance, a phone that we didn't especially like.

The beta, which Sony is calling the Xperia Beta Program, is currently only available to Xperia X Performance users in European countries (specifically Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands). Sony has not commented on whether it plans to expand the beta's reach.

AOSP changelogs posted for August security patches, developer preview 5, Wear preview 2, and a mystery Lollipop update for the Nexus 10

AOSP changelogs posted for August security patches, developer preview 5, Wear preview 2, and a mystery Lollipop update for the Nexus 10

The odds are pretty good that if you're using a still-supported Nexus device, it's probably running August's security update by now. The factory images became available on Monday of last week and OTAs have been intermittently rolling out since then. The push to AOSP took a little longer and finally included a couple of other tags that were behind schedule. All of the changes have been compiled into their respective lists and the changelogs are ready for perusal.

Google's Android Security Bulletin details the potential vulnerabilities addressed by the August updates, but it's not too rare to see other small bug fixes and adjustments hidden among the changes.

Quidgets hides homescreen widgets in the Quick Settings tiles on Android Nougat

Quidgets hides homescreen widgets in the Quick Settings tiles on Android Nougat

Android's homescreen widgets were one of its signature features when it debuted as an iOS alternative (which is kind of funny in itself), but developers seem to positively thrill in ways to stick them in other places as well. Case in point: Quidgets from Joseph Paul Antonetti. This little app allows users to hide a full-sized homescreen widget up in the Quick Settings menu, making it accessible from any app with a quick swipe. There's only one downside: it's exclusive to Android 7.0 for the time being.

Action Launcher v3.9 beta includes features from the rumored Nexus Launcher

Action Launcher v3.9 beta includes features from the rumored Nexus Launcher

Developer Chris Lacy has been hard at work, it seems. Just a few days after we posted details of the upcoming Nexus Launcher for Google's devices, a new beta build of Action Launcher 3 is live with several features seen in that leak. This is all based on non-final software and the beta will have a few bugs, but you can give it a shot right now.

This is how Google's crazy new home button for Assistant on the 2016 Nexus phones animates

This is how Google's crazy new home button for Assistant on the 2016 Nexus phones animates

You've all been asking: "how is this crazy weird new home button with the little colored dots going to work?" Today, we finally have an answer for you. In animated GIF form. Because that's the best kind of answer. Before the GIF - a bit of background. At this point, it is our basic assumption that the reasoning behind the home button's rather radically colorful redesign is in order to promote Google Assistant (possibly via Now / On Tap functions), which has been teased by Google in the past using these four little colored dots.
