There's a new version of Android rolling out in beta, and it doesn't seem to change much. One thing we've spotted is an improvement to setting live wallpapers. A year ago it seemed like Google was going to let live wallpapers die, and now here we are. Now, you can pick where they'll be applied in Android 7.1.2. Read More
The Xposed Framework and its associated modules are the best friends of users who know their way around root-level tools, but don't want a full custom ROM (or can't find one for their less-popular devices). One downside is that Xposed is the passion project of a single developer, "rovo89." He (we have it on fairly good authority that it is he, though the dev is very private) works on the framework outside of his day job, and it's often several months before rovo89 has it working to a level that's ready for general users. NVIDIA had an OTA ready to go for the 2017 SHIELD with various goodies when it launched a couple weeks ago, but owners of the original box were left waiting. Now, the original SHIELD Android TV can get in on the fun with the SHIELD Experience 5.0.2 update. This update comes with new apps, improved performance, and new features. Read More
The Verizon variant of the Moto Z, along with other Motorola devices, got its Nougat update in November. The company said it would release Nougat to the unlocked Moto Z in February (that's a good few months after the Verizon variant), and now the Moto Z Play is on course to be updated too, via an early preview of the software in the Motorola Feedback Network.
The Moto Z Play is the lower-specced, slightly cheaper version of the flagship Moto Z. The tip we've received tells us that people in the Feedback Network with a Z Play will be getting the early preview version, and that Motorola are "moving quickly" on this. Read More
You may remember that right at the end of December, OnePlus started rolling out OxygenOS 4.0, essentially Android 7.0 Nougat, for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. And you'd be completely correct. However, this was halted after 4.0 was found to be buggy and unstable for the OnePlus 3T. Now, 4.0.2 is rolling out, fixing the bugs and stabilizing the update. Read More
HTC has been sort of falling apart lately. While the 10 was a solid improvement over the last year's M9, the A9s was a downgraded and even more iPhone-inspired version of the A9, and the recently-announced U Ultra is already somewhat doomed thanks to its lack of a headphone jack, very small battery, limited availability, and ambitious price tag. In the latest installment of the saga, the mid-range One A9 is just now receiving Android 7.0 Nougat. Read More
Motorola customers who opted for the unlocked version of the Moto Z, as opposed to the Verizon-exclusive Moto Z Droid models, are feeling a little miffed. Droid owners have been rocking the latest version of Android for months now, but the GSM unlocked variants (which usually get updates faster) haven't had so much as a whiff of Nougat. We covered the story on Android Police yesterday after receiving multiple complaints from our readers. Motorola's response, delivered via Twitter, was less than encouraging. Read More
In most cases, buying an unlocked Android phone means faster updates, because (in most cases) it sidesteps the carrier approval process. Motorola's 2016 flagship, the Moto Z, was updated to Android Nougat almost two months ago. In addition to all the lovely features that Nougat brings, the update also added Daydream compatibility. The only problem? The unlocked US variant of the Moto Z still hasn't received the update, only the Verizon-exclusive Moto Z Droid and Z Droid Force. Read More
NVIDIA is getting ready to roll out Android 7.0 to the SHIELD Android TV, and of course it's shipping the new SHIELD with Android 7.0 pre-installed. But what of the SHIELD Tablet and Tablet K1? There's been little word on what's up with these devices, but NVIDIA's SHIELD Hub account on Google+ says that update is happening. It's not the strongest confirmation you can get, but we'll take anything we can get right now. Read More
WhatsApp Nougat users, the time has come, the day is here — well, it was here a couple of days ago, but it was the weekend and I was busy sweeping the floors of my new apartment, so I had to delay coverage... priorities y'know. Anyway, for all of you who have been lamenting the poor notification situation on Nougat, cried over the fact that you only see the most recent message making the whole "notification" thing completely useless, things are looking out.
In version 2.17.13 beta (grab it from APK Mirror), WhatsApp has properly implemented notifications on Android 7.0 and 7.1 Nougat devices. Read More
